Freshman Collin Murray-Boyles steps up as new starter
South Carolina’s starting five has seen a change this past week as Collin Murray-Boyles has stepped up and proven to be a successful and talented starter.
A Columbia native, Murray-Boyles has made a name for himself as a freshman. This season he has averaged 6.4 points, 1.3 assists and 3.2 rebounds per game as a versatile player. After battling mono in the beginning of the season, Murray-Boyles is back healthy and ready to contribute to his team.
“I thought the timing was good, I thought he was healthy enough to try,” head coach Lamont Paris said. “I think we’re a little more explosive at the start of the game with him in there as a more explosive athlete and a stronger guy.”

While Murray-Boyles was dealing with his illness, Stephen Clark was primarily starting as a big man. So far, he has only averaged 2.8 points, 2.4 rebounds and 11.6 minutes per game this season. Despite his veteran experience, Clark averages less points, rebounds and minutes per game than Murray-Boyles.
After spending four seasons at the Citadel, Clark has struggled adjusting to SEC style of play. Clark knew that giving up his starting spot would benefit his team in the end.

“Stephen Clark came to my office and mentioned it to me, I had been thinking about it also,” Paris said. “It tells you what kind of kid he is, I mean it’s a big time gesture so once that happened certainly it was the right time to make the change.”

Murray-Boyles had a strong high school career at Wasatch Academy that has carried over to his time as a Gamecock. As Murray-Boyles continues to get stronger and healthier, his teammates continue to see his strength and size as a benefit.
“Collin is just a naturally gifted rebounder,” Paris said. “He’s got good hands, good timing, good athleticism.”
Since coming to South Carolina, Murray-Boyles has gained muscle and experience, helping him gain Paris’ trust in his new role. Paris made this change ahead of SEC road play as the Gamecocks will soon travel to Arkansas.
