All-freshman guard hits transfer portal
The fifth Gamecock basketball player has hit the transfer portal over the last week.
South Carolina’s Devin Carter is in the NCAA transfer portal, a University of South Carolina spokesperson confirmed to GamecockCentral.
Carter was the Gamecock basketball program’s most productive freshman, averaging nine points and 3.8 rebounds per game en route to the SEC’s All-Freshman team.
He arrived at South Carolina as a top 100 prospect and someone who played a prep year at Brewster Academy in New Hampshire. The On3 Consensus – a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies – ranked Carter as the No. 91 overall player in the country, No. 8 combo guard in the nation and No. 1 player from the state of New Hampshire.
He becomes the fifth Gamecock basketball player to enter the transfer portal over the last week, joining Erik Stevenson, Jermaine Couisnard, Wildens Leveque and Ta’Quan Woodley. The University of South Carolina moved on from Frank Martin two weeks ago after ten seasons at the helm of the program in Columbia.

South Carolina finished this past season season 18-13 overall, 9-10 in the SEC, missing the NCAA Tournament for the fifth straight season and ninth time in 10 years under Martin.

“After a thorough evaluation of our men’s basketball program, we have decided to make a change,” Ray Tanner said in a university release announcing Martin’s dismissal. “We are grateful for the dedication that Coach Martin has made to Gamecock Basketball. We wish him and his family nothing but the best in the future.”
Martin was replaced by the Carolina administration with former Chattanooga head coach Lamont Paris, who had his introductory press conference last week in Columbia.
Carter played his final two seasons of high school basketball at Doral Academy in Florida, averaging nearly 30 points and over rebounds per game as a senior. He was named Player of the Year in the state of Florida’s 7A class while earning Florida Association of Basketball Coaches First Team All-State Honors for Class 7A. Carter spent the 2020-201 season at Brewester Academy and played his freshman and sophomore seasons at Cherry Creek in Colorado.
Gamecock basketball has two prospects signed in the 2022 recruiting class: Zachary Davis from Denmark-Olar High in South Carolina and Daniel Hankins-Sanford out of North Carolina.
