Two Gamecock football players enter the transfer portal

Offensive lineman Jazston Turnetine and wide receiver Trey Adkins have both made the decision to transfer from Gamecock football, entering the NCAA transfer portal on Friday.

Previous portal entries this offseason for Gamecock football include Devontae Davis, Jakeem Green, EJ Jenkins, Rico Powers, Eric Shaw, and William Rogers.

Turnetine, a Georgia native who signed with Gamecock football in the 2020 recruiting class, came to Columbia via way of Hutchinson Community College in Kansas.

Fifth-year “Super Senior” who will compete for a starting role along the offensive line again in 2022… possesses tremendous size… continues to develop… former junior college player who has two years of experience at the Division I level… has made 10 starts for the Gamecocks, all at left tackle.

2021 (Senior)

Appeared in 11 games, making seven starts… started at left tackle in the first two games against Eastern Illinois and East Carolina… started for five-consecutive games at left tackle against Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Texas A&M, Florida and Missouri.

2020 (Junior)

Junior college transfer from Hutchinson (Kan.) C.C. who enrolled in January and spent his first season with the Gamecocks… appeared in six games making three starts… all of his action came at left tackle… made his debut in the season opener against Tennessee… earned his first start in the win over Auburn… also made starts against LSU and Texas A&M… saw action in a reserve role against Vanderbilt and Georgia… named to the SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll.

2019 (Sophomore)

Started at offensive tackle in his second season at Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College… earned second-team All-America honors… the Blue Dragons posted a 10-2 mark, winning the Salt City Bowl for a second-straight year… coached by Rion Rhoades… rated the Number 4 JUCO offensive tackle in the nation by JCGridiron.com.. considered the 35th-best JUCO prospect in the country by Rivals… ranked as the sixth-best JUCO offensive tackle in the nation and No. 47 overall by 247 Sports Composite.

2018 (Freshman)

Began his collegiate career at Hutchinson (Kan.) C.C… started at offensive tackle… the Blue Dragons went 9-3 and won the Salt City Bowl.

HIGH SCHOOL

Graduated from Stockbridge (Ga.) High School in 2018… coached by Kevin Whitley… the Tigers went 11-3 in his senior season of 2017, losing in the third round of the Georgia Class AAAAA state playoffs.

Jazston G. Turnetine was born Nov. 16, 1999… is a media arts major.

Adkins, an Upstate native, originally joined the Gamecock football program as a walk-on, but earned a scholarship for the 2021 football season. For his career, he tallied 7 catches for 98 yards.

2021 (Redshirt Junior)

Placed on scholarship prior to the start of the season… played in eight contests… caught two passes for 20 yards… had a 19-yard reception in the season-opener against Eastern Illinois… saw his most extensive action at Texas A&M and was credited with a one-yard reception in that contest… named to the SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll for the third time.

2020 (Redshirt Sophomore)

Appeared in six games… played in just one of the first five games (Vanderbilt), then saw action in each of the final five games of the season… caught two passes, both in the Missouri game, for 20 yards… named to the SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll for the second time.

2019 (Redshirt Freshman)

Saw action in four games, including each of the last three contests… caught three passes for 58 yards… made his collegiate debut in the win over Charleston Southern… had two receptions for 33 yards against Appalachian State, including a 29-yard catch, the longest of his career… also had a 25-yard reception at Texas A&M… named to the SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll

2018 (Freshman)

Walk-on wide receiver who was added when the roster expanded in late August… did not see any game action… redshirted.

HIGH SCHOOL

Graduated from Hillcrest High School in Simpsonville, S.C. in 2018… helped Hillcrest to an 11-3 record as a senior in 2017… coached by Greg Porter… earned all-region honors and was a second-team All-Upstate selection after catching 63 passes for 947 yards as a senior… earned a spot on the all-tournament team for the Powerade 7on7 Invitational in Charlotte in 2017.

PERSONAL

William Edward Adkins III was born June 27, 2000… is a sport and entertainment management major who is on schedule to graduate in December… as a sixth-grader, wrote a letter to the Hillcrest High School football coach talking of his dream of playing for the Gamecocks… delivered pizzas in his spare time to help pay for his education prior to going on scholarship in June of 2021.
