Gamecock great Marcus Lattimore impressed by Mario Anderson
During an interview with Gamecock Central on GC Live Afternoon Drive, Gamecock great Marcus Lattimore couldn’t help but smile when asked about South Carolina running back Mario Anderson.
“I was waiting on you to ask me that,” Lattimore said with a giant grin on his face. “That dude is possessed. He is possessed out there. That type of back, you don’t see that type of back anymore. He’s like an anomaly from just watching all of college football. Everybody can see his heart when he’s running. He’s running with his heart. Every single play it’s just being poured out onto the field. And it’s every single run. He doesn’t take a play off. I haven’t seen (him tap his head) one time to take himself off the field because he’s tired. That’s not in his DNA.

That passion has led Anderson to be one of 73 players from Division I (FBS) to be nominated for the 2023 Burlsworth Trophy. The Burlsworth Trophy is given to the most outstanding football player in American who began his career as a Walk-On and has shown outstanding performance on the field.
His running style on the field has reminded many, including Lattimore, of former Gamecock Mike Davis. Someone Lattimore had the opportunity to play beside during the 2012 season.

“The last thing you expect with that body type is for them to have quick feet or just to be crafty in the hole. They both have this ability to make this jump cut, this quick jump cut but to always get back vertical real fast at the same time. They’re both compacted and they have so much power from their thighs to their core. (That area) that’s where they’re living. They make these quick jump cuts and get vertical in a blink and they gain eight yards. They’re fast. Mario Anderson and Mike Davis, they have speed. They can run. They can run away from people but they’re also stocky, which is so rare to see that… I’ve never met (Anderson) but I’m looking forward to the opportunity to meet him.”

Lattimore will hopefully get that opportunity next weekend when he returns to Columbia for a meet-and-greet. The former All-American running back told Gamecock Central that while he won’t be able to attend this weekend’s game, which will honor the 2010-13 teams, he’ll be attendance for next week’s game against Vanderbilt. Lattimore will be holding a meet-and-greet next Thursday (11/9) at Navy Federal Credit Union in Columbia starting at 6:15 p.m.
