Video: It wasn't always this way
Gamecock Women’s Basketball: News • Recruiting • Schedule • Roster • Stats • SEC • Polls • Scholarships
Instead of writing some cheesy line with a play on words about how South Carolina is advancing to their fourth Final Four in program history, let’s take a step back in time.
I’m talking well before any Gamecock fan expected to see confetti on the court annually at this time of the year. I’m talking about the days when Roscoe Wilson would take her daughter A’ja Wilson to games, long before her statue was ever erected. The days that you could go to a game and sit wherever you wanted because the stands were practically empty. I’m talking about the time in 2013 when a USC women’s basketball game was bumped from being played on their own home-court at Colonial Life Arena for a Miranda Lambert concert and were forced to play at the Coliseum across the street.
Since 2015, Gamecock women’s basketball has now advanced to four Final Fours in program history. But what made last night so historic is that it marks the first time that USC has advanced to the Final Four in back-to-back years.

“It’s huge. It’s huge. And A’ja Wilson has never been able to do back-to-back Final Fours,” Dawn Staley said with a smile. “So she’s gotta give credit to this team. But, I mean, it’s great. I’m just super happy for — you know, I’m super happy for all of our team, but truly super happy for our juniors who experienced three years ago where we had a pretty darn good team that could have gone far in the tournament and it was just abruptly stopped. And then you’re just left holding the bag, like that’s it, you know. And then they come back and get us to the Final Four and lose in a heartbreaking way. And then it’s hard to get back.”
