Gamecocks in Minor League Baseball: April recap

A new season in the minors brings new opportunities for former Gamecocks who have extended their baseball careers. Here’s how they are doing so far in 2025.

Garrett Gainey — Charleston Riverdogs

Gainey, a Hartsville native, remains in his home state after being assigned to the Charleston Riverdogs through the Rays organization. With the Riverdogs, Gainey has made 8 appearances over 12.0 innings with a 5.25 ERA and 12 strikeouts.

Cole Messina — Spokane Indians

Messina, who spent the 2024 season with the Indians, is batting .274 through 20 games. The Rockies’ third-round draft pick has already surpassed the number of games he played in 2024 at just 17.

In 20 games, Messina has started 14 times behind the plate with the other six as a DH. At the plate, Messina has hit two home runs and driven in 10 runs.

Eli Jones — Fort Myers Mighty Mussels

After spending 2024 unassigned with the Twins organization, Jones is now a member of the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels. In 22 innings pitched, Jones has a 1-3 record with a 4.91 ERA and 19 strikeouts.

Braylen Wimmer — Spokane Indians

As a member of the Rockies organization, Wimmer was moved to the Indians in 2025. Since then, Wimmer has made 25 appearances while batting .265 with two home runs and 12 RBIs.

Jack Mahoney — Hartford Yard Goats

Also a member of the Rockies organization, Mahoney was sent to the Hartford Yard Goats from the Spokane Indians in 2025. Through 18.1 innings, Mahoney has pitched to a 5.59 ERA with 18 strikeouts. In addition, Mahoney has started all five games he has appeared in.

Will Sanders — Knoxville Smokies

Through the Cubs organization, Sanders is now with the Knoxville Smokies after spending the majority of the 2024 season with the South Bend Cubs. Sanders has started in five games and has thrown a 3.47 ERA over 23.2 innings with 21 strikeouts and a 1.29 WHIP.

Sanders threw a season-high seven strikeouts Friday, April 11, against the Rocket City Trash Pandas.

James Hicks — Corpus Christi Hooks

Hicks is off to a slower start in 2025 pitching to a 7.41 ERA in just four games. Over 17 innings, Hicks has thrown 17 strikeouts and given up 15 runs.

However, on April 24, Hicks had five strikeouts over 4.2 innings giving up just one run and one walk.

Noah Hall — Brooklyn Cyclones

So far this season, Hall is off to a dominant start, pitching to a 1.88 ERA over 28.2 innings. With 35 strikeouts over six games, Hall has a 2-2 record in 2025. On April 29, Hall pitched five innings with seven strikeouts in a strong start on the mound.

Cade Austin — Tampa Tarpons

In his second season with the Tarpons, a part of the Yankees organization, Austin has made seven appearances as a relief pitcher. In 11 innings, Austin has earned a 4.09 ERA with nine strikeouts.

In his most recent appearance, Austin pitched 2.1 innings, allowing no hits with just one run and two strikeouts.

Brady Allen — Erie SeaWolves

Allen has been a member of the SeaWolves since being traded from the Marlins to the Tigers in 2023. However, this season has gotten off to a rocky start as he’s batting .146. Through 41 at-bats, Allen has just 6 hits and one home run.

Josiah Sightler — Retired

On January 17, 2025, Sightler retired from the MiLB after getting drafted in 2022 to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Sightler spent all of the 2024 season with the Grasshoppers and overall in the MiLB batted .246 with 28 home runs.

Julian Bosnic- Greensboro Grasshoppers

Within the Pirates organization, Bosnic finds himself with a 0-1 record in 2025 on the mound with the Greensboro Grasshoppers. Bosnic is pitching to a 6.75 ERA through 9.1 innings with six strikeouts.

Colin Burgess — Released

After battling injury for a majority of the 2024 season, the West Michigan Whitecaps released Burgess on March 27, 2025. Throughout his MiLB career, Burgess batted .273 with just five RBIs.

Wes Clarke — Nashville Sounds

In 2025, Clarke has batted .196 four home runs and 12 RBIs. In the field, Clarke has started 16 games at first base and 11 as a DH. However, most recently on May 4, Clarke went 0-for-5 at the plate.

Carlos Cortes — Las Vegas Aviators

In his first year with the Aviators, Cortes is batting .255 with three home runs and 11 RBIs. Cortes has nine starts in the outfield and seven at DH.

Thomas Farr — Daytona Tortugas

Within the Reds organization, Farr has landed a spot with the Daytona Tortugas. Since then, Farr has a 4.66 ERA in 2025 over 9.2 innings. In just three games this season, he has thrown five strikeouts and owns a 1.45 WHIP.

TJ Hopkins — Released

After being drafted in 2019 by the Reds, Hopkins was traded to the Giants in 2023. Then he was later traded to the Tigers in 2024 where he would be released by their Double-A affiliate the Erie SeaWolves in 2025.

In his MiLB career, Hopkins batted .270 with 49 home runs in 1,336 at-bats. During his time in the MLB with the Reds in 2023, Hopkins batted .171 through 41 at-bats.

Brett Kerry — Salt Lake Bees

In 2025, Kerry has struggled, pitching to a 12.12 ERA in just 16.1 innings. On April 30, Kerry was placed on the seven-day injured list by the Bees and has yet to return.

Daniel Lloyd — Chesapeake Baysox

Lloyd has made a strong start on the mound within the Orioles organization in 2025. The right handed pitcher has pitched a 1.54 ERA in 11.2 innings with 8 strikeouts. This has earned Lloyd a 2-0 record and a 0.94 whip.

Reid Morgan — Released

As of March 20, Morgan was released by the Arkansas Travelers. After being drafted by the Mariners in 2019, Morgan owns a career 4.84 ERA over 167.1 innings.

TJ Shook — Syracuse Mets

Shook started the 2025 season off with the Binghamton Rumble Ponies pitching to a 3.38 ERA in eight innings. But he was later assigned to the Syracuse Mets where he has earned a 0.00 ERA in three innings of work.
