Gamecocks in Minor League Baseball: May recap

The month of May brought highs and lows for many former Gamecocks competing in the minors across the country. Here’s how they did this past month in the MiLB.

Garrett Gainey – Bowling Green Hot Rods

On the first of the month, Gainey was assigned to the Bowling Green Hot Rods from the Charleston RiverDogs. Since then, Gainey pitched a 7.36 ERA, earning him a 0-2 record across 11.0 innings in May. Gainey allowed nine hits and nine runs, throwing 11 strikeouts.

Cole Messina – Spokane Indians

In May, Messina took 89 at-bats, producing a .270 batting average with three home runs and 24 hits. Messina drove in 12 runs while slugging .472 and earning a .359 on-base percentage.

Eli Jones – Fort Myers Mighty Mussels

Taking the mound four times in May with three starts, Jones pitched to a 3.74 ERA in 21.2 innings. Jones allowed 11 runs off 17 hits with 21 strikeouts, averaging one strikeout per inning.

Jones continues to earn respect as a reliable starter after also starting five games in April.

Braylen Wimmer – Spokane Indians

Alongside his former Gamecock teammate Messina, Wimmer had 105 at-bats in May, hitting four homers, including two on May 26. Whilst batting .337, Wimmer scored 17 runs with 35 hits.

Wimmer earned a .529 slugging percentage despite striking out 25 times in May. He took home Northwest League Player of the Week honors at the end of the month for his on-field success.

Jack Mahoney – Hartford Yard Goats

Compared to April, Mahoney’s ERA has increased from 6.75 to 7.88. Starting in four games, Mahoney allowed 30 hits, 10 of which came on May 10.

Mahoney pitched across 16 total innings, allowing 14 runs, all being earned, and four homers. So far, Mahoney’s ERA in up drastically from 2024, going from 3.90 to 7.34.

Will Sanders – Iowa Cubs

On May 29, Sanders got moved up to the Chicago Cubs’ Triple-A affiliate after pitching well with the Knoxville Smokies in Double-A. The right-hander had earned himself SOU Pitcher of the Week honors with the Smokies in mid-May.

Sanders started five games in May, four for the Smokies and one for the Iowa Cubs in Triple-A. Pitching to a 2.77 ERA, Sanders allowed just eight runs on eight hits with 29 strikeouts.

James Hicks – Corpus Christi Hooks

Hicks is currently listed on the 60-day injured list. Hicks last pitched on April 24. He has a 7.41 ERA across 4.2 innings pitched.

Noah Hall – Brooklyn Cyclones

Hall pitched to a 2.96 ERA across five games, four of which he started. In 24.1 innings pitched, Hall allowed 9 runs off 17 hits and just two homers. He recorded 21 strikeouts across those innings in May.

Cade Austin – Tampa Tarpons

Austin continues to be a strong relief pitcher for the Tarpons. On the mound, he pitched to a 0.79 ERA across 11.1 innings in nine games. He allowed just four runs off eight hits compared to 13 strikeouts in May.

Brady Allen – Erie SeaWolves

Allen struggled at the plate as he took just 21 at-bats across May, recording a .138 batting average with two hits. He struck out seven times and only drove in one run.

Julian Bosnic – Greensboro Grasshoppers

As a relief pitcher, Bosnic earned a 4.63 ERA in May across eight games and 11.2 innings. He pitched to 15 strikeouts, allowing six runs off 11 hits.

Colin Burgess – Augusta Green Jackets

After being released from the Tigers organization on March 27, Burgess was picked up by the Atlanta Braves and assigned to the Augusta Green Jackets on May 24.

In Augusta, Burgess got nine at-bats in May, batting .222 with two hits.

Wes Clarke – Nashville Sounds

Struggling at the plate, Clarke batted .190 in May over 58 at-bats. In addition, Clarke struck out 27 times with one homer and two RBI.

Carlos Cortes – Las Vegas Aviators

At the plate, Cortes hit .257 with 16 hits, 15 runs and 18 RBI. Cortes also hit five homers with just eight strikeouts.

Thomas Farr – Daytona Dragons

Farr started with the Daytona Tortugas but was assigned to the Chattanooga Lookouts on May 13. On May 30, Farr was assigned to the Dayton Dragons in High-A.

Taking the mound five times in May, Farr produced a 1.64 ERA as a relief pitcher for the Dragons. In addition, Farr allowed just nine hits and two runs on the mound.

Brett Kerry – ACL Angels

After spending April with the Salt Lake Bees, Kerry was placed on the seven-day injured list on April 30. Following that, the Bees sent Kerry on a rehab assignment with the ACL Angels on May 16.

Kelly started on the mound four times in May, earning a 5.63 ERA and allowing just five runs off seven hits.

Daniel Lloyd – Chesapeake Baysox

Continuing his strongest season thus far, Lloyd pitched a 2.70 ERA across May. Lloyd threw 15 strikeouts, allowing just four runs in 13.1 relief innings.

TJ Shook – Binghamton Rumble Ponies

On May 6, Shook was assigned to the Binghamton Rumble Ponies from the Syracuse Mets. The right-hander went 4-0 with a 0.69 ERA in 13 innings of work. In total in May, he allowed just six hits and one run. He struck out 20 batters and walked two.
