MORE: South Carolina emphasizing ‘precise aggression’ offensively

By Collyn Taylor

Things ratchet up a level for South Carolina this week.

The Gamecocks, after a 35-14 victory over Georiga State, now hit the road to play an Arkansas team on the cusp of the top 15 nationally.

It’ll take a better performance across the board, especially offensively, to win on the road but the message has been simple.

“Just going out there with precise aggression,” Eric Douglas said.

Douglas said the saying is used “pretty much every week,” trying to emphasize how the Gamecocks want to play offensively.

It’s crux boils down to biding time, playing within the offense until the moment is right and then striking.

“You have to know when to take your shot. It’s like a sniper, you know? You got to be in that field,” Douglas said. “Everything might not be going right in the field but when you get your shot you have to take it. That’s pretty much it. Go out there with precise aggression.”

The Gamecocks struggled offensively in the opener despite winning by three touchdowns. South Carolina averaged 4.4 yards per play, 6.1 per pass and 3.3 per rush when taking out sack yardage.

South Carolina only had four explosive plays, two in the pass game, and struggled for consistency most of the night.

They’ll need to have a better form of precise aggression if South Carolina players want to walk out of Arkansas Saturday with a win.

“Just knowing take what they give you, play our offense and our scheme. Then when that play’s there, when that shot is there, take your shot,” Spencer Rattler said, mimicking holding a rifle. “It has to be a precise aggression. It’s like referring to a sniper. You have to have to have that precise aggression. When your shot’s there, take it.”

ESPN’s FPI gives South Carolina a 26.6 percent chance to upset the Razorbacks this weekend and the Gamecocks debuted as eight-point underdogs as well.

A few Gamecocks players—Rattler and MarShawn Lloyd—took to social media to defend their teammates Monday, and Shane Beamer said the morale in the locker room entering week two is “sky high.”

“The bond we have in that locker room is not going to change. No matter what’s going on the outside, the guys in the locker room know what’s going on and we have each other’s back,” Douglas said. “Regardless of anything exterior, we’re always looking interior. It’s always about us.”

Kickoff is scheduled for noon ET on ESPN Saturday.
