In his one year at South Carolina, Gamecocks football coach Shane Beamer has already established a reputation of going above and beyond to support the other sports programs on the University of South Carolina campus.

From basketball games, men’s and women’s, to softball to tennis, Beamer can often be spotted taking in games or matches to support his fellow Gamecock coaches.

So it comes as no surprise that when Lamont Paris was introduced as the 33rd men’s basketball coach in school history that Beamer was there, in person, to help welcome the new coach to the school.

“We’ve talked on the phone one time,” Beamer said of Paris. “I guess I can say that I talked to him before it was ‘official’ that he was our head coach. So I talked to him on the phone and then I went to the press conference, so I had a chance to visit with him before the press conference as well.

“I’m really impressed with him, excited for him. He’s got a great track record. He told me he loves football and that he’ll be out here at a bunch of our practices, which I’m eager to see him out here as well. Excited that he is here with us and excited to see what he’s going to do with our basketball program.”

When it comes to school pride and supporting the rest of the athletic department, Beamer “gets it.”

He appears to have developed a friendship with baseball coach Mark Kingston.

He was involved in five-star men’s basketball target G.G. Jackson‘s official visit for former coach Frank Martin.

And he appears to be a huge fan of Dawn Staley and the women’s basketball program, congratulating them on their trip to the Final Four as one of his first orders of business in Tuesday’s press conference.

South Carolina is currently at about the halfway point of spring football practice, completing practice seven of 15 on Tuesday with the eighth workout on Thursday. The Gamecocks will scrimmage for the first time on Saturday.

Beamer said Tuesday he’s happy with the progress and energy of his team, which has avoided major injuries but is banged up and bruised right now, as is common for spring practice.
