In his heart, Gavin Casas knew he still had unfinished business left at South Carolina. He had a chance to turn pro but ultimately decided to return to Columbia for the 2024 season.

This decision didn’t come easily for Casas, but since joining the Gamecocks, his love for baseball has been revived.

For the Gamecocks, the 2023 season ended in the Super Regionals, one step short of returning to the College World Series. While it left a sour taste in Casas’ mouth, it only helped fuel his offseason training.

“Ending the season how we did last year really set a pit in my stomach. I didn’t like how that went so in the offseason the goal was to improve athleticism,” Casas told GamecockCentral’s Jack Veltri in a Garnet Trust exclusive interview. “If you are more athletic you can do more things on the field, you can move better. You can swing harder, better bat speed, all that good stuff.”

Unsure about his future, Casas stayed in Columbia and continued to improve his game and athleticism. Ultimately, Casas made the decision to stay his senior year at South Carolina and withdrew from the 2023 MLB Draft.

“It was an interesting time for me because I didn’t really know what I was doing at that point in time. I didn’t know if I wanted to go into professional baseball, I didn’t know what everything looked like,” Casas said. It was probably that next week, we got to work.”

Previous to South Carolina, Casas played for Vanderbilt but found himself unhappy and losing his love for the game. Another big part of his reason to return to South Carolina, it rekindled his love for the game.

“I felt like I could do a lot better than what I did and with the numbers they were giving me I thought it was best to return to school,” Casas said. “It was just because of the numbers, I was really really unhappy at Vanderbilt. It was to the point where I almost didn’t want to keep playing. Coming to South Carolina, it kind of rejoiced that love for the game. I found out that baseball was fun again and it really opened my eyes again and I wasn’t ready to leave.”
