'I'm here and I'm happy': Dowell Loggains puts any rumors about Arkansas OC opening to rest

Dowell Loggains shook his head and then rubbed his left hand against his face. It was almost like he knew what was coming next.

Back in late October, Arkansas fired offensive coordinator Dan Enos after losing six straight games. With this being the time of year when coaches get fired and names get thrown into the hat, it didn’t surprise Loggains to see his name come up for the opening with the Razorbacks.

“Look, I understand why my name comes up there,” said Loggains, who walked on as a quarterback at Arkansas in 2000. “I went to school there, I was born there, I played football there. My wife was a cheerleader there, she’s from Arkansas. I had an unbelievable opportunity to go back and coach at my alma mater, which is awesome. I hope everyone gets that that aspires to get that.”

While it would make sense for Loggains to want to go back home, that’s not what he wants to do. Instead, he said he believes in head coach Shane Beamer and what he is building at South Carolina.

Loggains also didn’t sound like he’d be okay with leaving his players in the dust after only being in Columbia for a short time.

“I think it’s disrespectful to think about anything other than my promise I made to Spencer Rattler when I got here and Juice Wells and Xavier Legette when I’m trying to recruit those guys to come back and not get in the transfer portal, to not enter the NFL Draft,” Loggains said.

Sitting at 4-6, it hasn’t been the year Loggains or anyone else could’ve imagined. Expectations were high after the Gamecocks won eight games last year. But Loggains has appreciated the effort the players have put in and how they’ve fought this entire season.

“I believe in the players in our locker room,” he said. “I love my quarterbacks from Spencer to LaNorris (Sellers) to Tanner (Bailey) to Colten (Gauthier) to Luke Doty to the guys that are coming. And I deeply care about those guys.”

Plus, it’s more than just about football for Loggains. He also has to think about his family and what’s best for them, too. And right now, he believes it’s best to stay put.

“My family’s happy here, my wife’s happy here, my kids are happy in school,” Loggains said. “That’s how I’m going to answer that question. I’m being as honest and transparent as I could. I believe in what’s going on here, and I hope that everyone does.

“But I’m here and I’m happy, my wife’s happy, my kids are happy, and I love coming to work every day. That’s the most important thing to me is walking through the door, I work for a guy that I not only believe in who he is but why he’s doing it as well.”
