South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer met with the media on Tuesday afternoon to preview Mississippi State as well as give the latest on the injury front for the Gamecocks.

The news for wide receiver Juice Wells, who has a foot injury, was good and bad as Wells is out this week but the injury is not expected to be season-ending.

“Juice will be out this week. He will not be able to play,” Beamer said. “He did see a specialist this morning in Charlotte. And it was a good visit as well. Nothing that is season-ending. Is something that I feel like the best thing is just to rest it for this week. We’ll see about next week for Tennessee, and then we have an open week after that. So we’ll certainly reevaluate things as we get more into next week. Let’s just let the foot settle down a little bit, see where we are, and then we’ll go from there. But disappointed for him, because I know how hard he worked to get back, and then had a great week of practice. But we’ll continue to do what’s best for him going forward, but he won’t be able to play this Saturday.”

The Gamecocks’ leading returning receiver had been returning from a summer foot injury that he had surgery on in the preseason.

Wells has played in all three games and appeared to be getting close to his old self when he scored the first touchdown of Saturday’s matchup with Georgia.

But he had to exit to the locker room right after that score and Beamer told CBS that they feared he had broken a bone in his foot.

In other injury news, Beamer gave the latest on wide receiver Ahmarean Brown

“All of our (other) guys are, I would say, in okay shape,” Beamer said. “A.B. did not practice today. Ahmarean Brown, I expect him to do a little bit tomorrow. I would say he’s questionable for this week. He was in good spirits at practice and doing some stuff on the side, so he needs to be able to get out there and do a little bit in practice tomorrow. But he’s not far off, and hopefully he will be able to, without a doubt. And anyone else that was out from last week, expect to get back this week. JT Geer did a little bit in practice today, so we’re optimistic that he’ll be able to do something on Saturday as well. He did practice a little bit today.”

Brown left the Furman game early with what Beamer called a hamstring injury and did not travel to Athens on Saturday.

Geer, a transfer from Syracuse, has yet to make his South Carolina debut due to a lower-body injury suffered in one of the Gamecocks’ preseason scrimmages.

EDGE Tyreek Johnson got banged up late in practice last week but Beamer has remained optimistic that he would return this week.

“Tyreek I think should be good,” Beamer said. “He did a little bit in practice on Sunday, did some stuff today. We’ll continue to try and progress him.”

South Carolina takes on Mississippi State this Saturday with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff at Williams-Brice Stadium.

“So I would say that Tyreek and JT and AB are all questionable, but trending in the right direction,” Beamer added. “And we got that teleconference tomorrow, 12 whatever, so I’ll have a better idea then. Need a full group as much as we can, a really good team we have coming in here in Mississippi State.”
