South Carolina transfer EDGE Jaylen Brown saw what the South Carolina defense did last year and thought, “I want in.”

A former target of assistant coach Sterling Lucas as a high school prospect last year, Brown originally signed with Missouri and played in five games for the Tigers in 2024 before entering the transfer portal.

After a visit to Columbia, the Madison, Ala., native quickly committed to the Gamecocks out of the portal.

“I think the production from last year for sure,” Brown said on why he chose South Carolina. “I think that was a big one. And I already had a connection with them. But just the production from last year.”

Now at South Carolina and about to go through spring practice in a couple of weeks, Brown is hoping to develop under Lucas much like transfer Kyle Kennard did in his one year with the highly regarded coach.

“He’s a high-energy dude,” Brown said. “He loves his players, and I can see that. And he wants us at a standard, and I really like that standard—a high standard. So that’s what I really like about him.”

Measuring in at 6-foot-6, 268 pounds, Brown has a long, wide frame, and as a true sophomore is already bigger than Kennard, who played at 6-foot-5, 238 pounds in 2024.

The former four-star prospect uses that size to hold up against the run but is looking to improve his ability to get to the quarterback this offseason.

“Yeah, I think my pass rush, he’s going to develop that,” Brown said. “I think my pass rush needs to be developed for sure, and yeah, just mainly my pass rush. I’m pretty good at the run.”

Brown and the Gamecocks kick off spring ball in a couple of weeks. He’ll battle several returners to join the rotation at EDGE that former freshman sensation Dylan Stewart will lead.
