South Carolina capped off the early signing period by landing a commitment from Camden’s Joyce Edwards, one of the most coveted prospects in the country.

Edwards made the announcement during a ceremony at Camden High School. She chose South Carolina over LSU and Clemson. Edwards also took official visits to Texas A&M and Stanford. South Carolina requested, and got, her final official visit the weekend of October 28.

Edwards and Sarah Strong have been the consensus top two players in the 2024 class for years, frequently flip-flopping in the HoopGurlz rankings. At 6-3, Edwards is a versatile forward who can do a little bit of everything, but she is most coveted for her defensive ability.

She has repeatedly showed up on lists of the best high school defenders, and ESPN recently rated her as one of the best rebounders in the class.

Edwards is the reigning South Carolina Gatorade state player of the year, and was named the MaxPreps National Female Athlete of the Year.

She was the only high school player on the USA Basketball U19 team this past summer, but led the team in scoring. During that time, she became close friends with current Gamecock Chloe Kitts and the two helped lead Team USA to a gold medal.

Edwards is the latest player in a run of Palmetto State talent that has included Alaina Coates, A’ja Wilson, Ashlyn Watkins, and MiLaysia Fulwiley, all of whom chose to stay home and play for Dawn Staley.

Gamecock fans joined in on Edwards’ recruitment. They organized a group that attended her state championship volleyball game and chanted “We want Joyce,” arranged a similar chant at South Carolina’s game against Maryland, and held a watch party for Edwards’ signing ceremony.

Edwards joins 12th-ranked point guard Madisen McDaniel and 26th-ranked post Adhel Tac for the 2024 signing class. With those three signed, South Carolina should have another top-five, if not top-three, signing class.
