South Carolina’s men’s basketball coach Lamont Paris has a very particular personal preference in wardrobe for the sidelines during games.

Simple, classy, and also doesn’t try to do too much. It stays within itself and remains cool and collected all of the time. Paris and the quarter-zip are a match made in heaven.

“I’ve always thought I’ve had an eye for fashion,” Paris said with a chuckle. “It’s the opposite of that probably, but it’s fun and it’s taken on a life of its own. I want to have fun with it as well.”

The “quarter-drip” or “q-zip drip” has been the fun wrinkle to the 2023 season.

The Gamecocks have had a lot of fun so far this year. Paris currently has South Carolina at 6-0 and fans are beginning to rally behind his favorite fashion choice.

What started as a running joke on X (formerly Twitter), the team has now fully embraced the trend. It’s helping fans find something to connect with the team and they are showing up for basketball.

The crowd for the Notre Dame game was the biggest of the season and made a real difference.

Fashion makes waves when there is a new style sweeping the tabloids. It seems that Paris’s fashion choice has begun to make it’s way around college basketball.

“I had a guy from the state of Wisconsin call me and he asked me about a couple players and I thought that’s what the conversation was,” Paris said. “At the end of the day he was like, ‘Oh, by the way, what are you always wearing quarter zips for?’ It’s taken on a life of its own but it’s fun and our fans have rallied behind it.”

When something like that can take off, it connects fans and can even help with chemistry within. The team is also in on the wave and like to have fun with it.

“Our players give me a hard time about it, I wore a hoodie one day and that was like ‘wow’. Don’t ever let them see me wear jeans, if they do they’ll go bananas,” Paris said.

One thing is for certain, the Gamecocks are winning. If the fashion choices make a difference Paris wants to be ahead of it.

“I think I need to increase the volume of quarter zips in my closet now,” he said.

South Carolina looks to extend their win streak to 7 against George Washington on Friday. The game begins at 7 p.m. and you can find all of your coverage right here on GamecockCentral.com.
