Following an 86-64 win against South Carolina State in a Friday night game, South Carolina head coach Lamont Paris spoke to the media about his team’s performance and how the team improved. Here’s what he had to say.

– Appreciate the press that made it. (Most of them are in Nashville, presumably.)

– Good for us to get the first win with this group. SC State has a good team, they’re aggressive. Tenacious on the offensive glass.

– Thought we did a good job in the first half, didn’t finish near the basket well in the first half though, could’ve been better on the offensive boards then.

– Really good response after loss, going to sound like coachspeak, but if the team had won the first game, the post-game messages wouldn’t have been as well-received.

– Took things to heart after the loss. Prepared better, individually.

– CMB significant improvement around the basket and finishing.

– People need to practice finishing down low. They’re shots that need practicing, no matter the individual.

– Every shot CMB took below the basket, he gathered himself and finished in a strong way.

– On starting lineup change: Watched the game again, have a lot of guys with similar levels of talent, so the change didn’t really have to do with ability rather than rotations.

Jacobi Wright is the kind of guy that is going to start well. Reiterated that the lineup change was not about differing levels of abilities.

– Zach did a good job coming off the bench. Actually played more minutes than Jacobi.

– On Jacobi: “He’s developing into a well-rounded guy.” Made some threes, found some good looks. Was aggressive tonight. Created good space. His game has developed from the time Lamont first saw him to now as a defender especially. “He’s developed holistically.”

– On defense: Thought we did a really good job defensively. There was a stretch in the first half where SC was “cooking as a defensive unit.” Really impressed with defensive effort.

– Weren’t super efficient on offense but defense allowed for comfortable margin.

– “The numbers don’t lie.” 8-27 from the perimeter, just under one point per possession. One point per possession is acceptable from three. “I can’t make them make it. All I can do is provide the environment that they feel comfortable taking those shots.”

– “Gotta spend time in the gym.” (Talking about perimeter shooting.)

– “I was making substitutions as I see fit.” (On rotational changes in-game.)
