'LaNorris Sellers is the best player in the country': South Carolina's star quarterback continues to shine on big stage

In South Carolina’s massive victory over in-state rival No. 12 Clemson, there was one player who stuck out more than the rest. Redshirt freshman quarterback LaNorris Sellers continues to prove why he is becoming a household name in Columbia.
“LaNorris Sellers is the best player in the country,” head coach Shane Beamer said. “If you’re not voting for that guy, for in the mix for the Heisman Trophy, you’re out of your minds. Name a player in the country that’s done more than that kid has this year, particularly today, in the environments that he’s done it in.”
Sellers was the Gamecocks’ knight in shining armor to help them come from behind to beat the Tigers. He scored both of the team’s two touchdowns in the game, the second of which was the game-winning score with a minute to go.
Early offensive blocking issues led Sellers to having to be quick on his feet and break numerous hard tackles. But that didn’t stop him. As a result, he ran all over the field and went for a game-high 166 rushing yards.
“Yeah, it’s amazing his ability to shed tackles. God blessed that young man with just a lot of just God-given ability, genetics, you name it. He’s worked really, really hard in the weight room from when he came in. He’s just a competitor. He’s a winner,” Beamer said. “Go back to what he did in high school at South Florence to what he did out there today. He’s special. He’s special.”

The strategy going into the game was simple. When you have a player with the amount of talent Sellers does, you just have to get him the ball.
“It’s kind of like just get the ball to LaNorris and get out of the way, and that’s what that’s what we did today,” Beamer said.”

Despite all the media attention and national headlines he’s making, Sellers remains humble. To him, it’s not about any of that; it’s about making plays for his team.
“I think it’s just football, honestly,” Sellers said. “I’ve been doing it all my life. So, just another game, just making a play. Beamer says all the time: ‘Players need to make plays.’ That’s what I did.”
Accordingly, Sellers’ talent has not gone unnoticed, even by his teammates. Senior running back Rocket Sanders had nothing but praise for his quarterback.
“He’s just Him,” Sanders said. “He’s one of The Ones. Great talent. I’ve been seeing this. In practice, like I said before, he gets touched and the play is over with, but when game time comes, he’s prepared for it. And I definitely give a big shout-out to him. He’s one of them Ones.”
