LaNorris Sellers shares how last season prepared him for what's to come
A smile came across LaNorris Sellers’ face as he was asked about what it was like to go through spring practice for the first time last year.
It’s unclear what he was thinking about when he started to smile. Maybe it was remembering the first pass he made or getting to learn from a veteran like Spencer Rattler. Whatever it was, last year taught him a lot about what to expect as a college football quarterback.
And now entering year two, he’s more ready than ever for what’s to come.
“I’m a lot more comfortable. Last year was kind of just fast pace. Everything was going foo foo foo,” Sellers said while making sound effects to mimic speed. “I knew the stuff, but to get out there on the field and seeing it for the first time in full SEC speed, you’re lost. But now it’s like, I’ve got it now. I know everything now. So it’s a lot easier for me.”

As Sellers goes through his second year of spring practice, the expectations are a lot higher. Many believe he will be the Gamecocks’ starting quarterback, the man to fill the shoes of Rattler.
This moment has been a long time coming for Sellers. It was just last year when he was coming into games during garbage time to make highlight-reel plays. Or during practice when he would give the defense “too good of a look” as the scout team quarterback.

“I mean, I just told coach Dowell (Loggains) in the coaches’ locker room, I said, ‘I can’t believe how fast that guy is,'” defensive coordinator Clayton White said last year. “I feel like he’s getting faster and bigger every two or three weeks.”

For Sellers, those were the days of hard work that have helped him get to where he is now.
“For me, it was fun. I look forward to those periods, like service periods and scout periods,” he said. “Just because it’s like you don’t really know what you’re doing, but you’ve got to make it work just to give the defense a better look.
“So I was out there pretty much trying to make the best plays I could, honestly. You had a full play read, but you didn’t know the other reads. So you had to pick something and stick to it. And if it wasn’t there, you just had to make a play. So that’s just what I took pride in last year.”
