LaNorris Sellers has the benefit at South Carolina of not feeling the pressure to come in and have to play right away.

The highly-talked-about freshman is in a room with entrenched starter Spencer Rattler and veteran Luke Doty, and those two are preaching patience to the four-star passer.

“I’ve learned a lot. It takes patience. You can’t rush or force anything,” Sellers said. “You have to wait your turn, be patient and take what the defense gives you.”

But that’s not to say Sellers won’t have the option, though, of playing at some point his freshman season at South Carolina.

“Not 100 percent sure,” Sellers said of the plan. “But (the coaches) said they want to help me get experience and just help the team best I can anywhere I can.”

And it can never hurt to have someone of Sellers’ skill set on the field in some regard as a freshman. That package set, though, won’t be fully formed until South Carolina gets through most of preseason camp.

Camp starts at the beginning of August and runs for a few weeks before North Carolina preparations begin.

“We’re probably waiting until after fall camp to open up anything and let me know anything,” Sellers said. “I’m looking forward to that.”

Sellers was one of the more discussed freshmen on the team in the spring, earning praise from both his teammates and coaches while also flashing in the spring game.

Him coming in for spring practice, Sellers said, was incredibly beneficial and allowed him to size up just how fast the college game can be.

“Everything is not always as easy as before. In high school, I wouldn’t say it was easy but (college) is a whole new world,” Sellers said.

“The speed of the game, the playbook, everything is more technical. They focus more on the smaller things whereas in high school you go out there and play ball.”

He spent the offseason getting stronger and prepared for his freshman season at South Carolina, adding a good bit of weight in the process.

After being listed at 232 pounds in the spring, Sellers is now 245 pounds.

“Coach Day? His workouts are the hardest things I’ve ever done in my entire life. But it all pays off,” Sellers said. “He works out everything. You have chains, hammers, the weight room and then the conditioning part. It’s everything at once. Every day you do everything.”

Time will tell what Sellers’ role will be, but he knows it’s going to take time and patience to get where he wants to go.

“I know it takes a lot to be an SEC quarterback,” he said. “You don’t just come in and play your best. Time is really the biggest thing.”
