South Carolina baseball opens the season this weekend with a three-game series against Miami (Oh.) and the Gamecocks are going to be without pitcher Matthew Becker and have others dealing with minor injuries as well

Head coach Mark Kingston provided the latest on the injury front during a Thursday press conference.

“Becker and (Roman) Kimball are dealing with minor latt issues. We think that it’s nothing serious in the short term, just a minor inconvenience right now,” Kingston said.

“Becker probably won’t pitch this weekend. Kimball probably will as of today,” Kingston said.

GamecockCentral’s Jack Veltri provided an update on Becker on The Insider’s Forum Thursday morning.

Despite the minor injury to Kimball, he was still announced as one of the Gamecocks’ starting pitchers for the opening weekend.

South Carolina will go with junior Eli Jones on Friday, redshirt junior Dylan Eskew on Saturday, and Kimball on Friday.

The New Hartford, N.Y., native did not pitch in 2023 after recovering from Tommy John surgery. The Notre Dame transfer was a perfect 4-0 with 32 strikeouts in 25 innings pitched for the Fighting Irish, who advanced to the College World Series in 2022.

There were a few other players who had injury questions entering the weekend.

First basemen Gavin Casas and Tyler Causey are each dealing with bumps and bruises.

“Casas and Causey are dealing with minor nagging issues, but we’re hoping they’re good to go this week,” Kingston said.

First pitch for Friday’s season-opener is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Founders Park with Saturday at noon and Sunday at 1:30. All three games will be streamed by SEC Network Plus.
