Major in-state safety from Football City commits to South Carolina
South Carolina is off to a hot start in its 2026 class and that continued on Thursday when Rock Hill (S.C.) South Pointe four-star safety J’Zavien Currence joined the fold.
The 6-foot-3, 210-pounder announced his pledge to the Gamecocks on Twitter/X, choosing South Carolina over offers from Georgia, Florida, Florida State, North Carolina, and many others.

“The culture at South Carolina is family-oriented and the coaches are great people,” Currence told On3 earlier this year. “Coach Beamer is a great head coach and he has the right people in the right place. They are all real and true to who they are. That coaching staff shows the love and they really make me feel important.”
South Carolina defensive backs coach Torrian Gray served as his recruiter of record.

“Coach Gray coaches all of the defensive backs at South Carolina,” Currence said. “He is a smart coach who is not afraid to coach his guys tough and call it like it is. Coach Gray is real all of the time, he doesn’t change it up in front of different people and he is a real coach that does a great job. We have a great relationship already.”

Currence is the No. 103 overall prospect in the 2026 cycle according to the On3 Industry Ranking — a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is also the No. 10 safety and top-ranked player from South Carolina in the class.
On3 ranks Currence No. 94 nationally and No. 9 among safeties in the 2026 On300.
Currence is the fifth commitment in the Gamecocks’ class, joining Newnan (Ga.) four-star linebacker Rodney Colton, Newberry (S.C.) four-star tight end Jamel Howse, Oxford (Ala.) four-star linebacker Keenan Britt, and Rock Hill (S.C.) South Pointe three-star IOL Anthony Baxter.
South Carolina is now ranked No. 7 in the On3 Team Recruiting Rankings for 2026.
