Marcus Satterfield, Spencer Rattler talk development of offense
Marcus Satterfield joked he watched South Carolina’s game against Georgia State during the bye week and about threw up.
Seeing it again, weeks removed from the game, helped him see how inconsistent the offense was. But his tone Wednesday in his weekly media availability was positive about the growth and direction of the Gamecocks’ offense.

“I don’t want to sound like a broken record, but the O-line, all they hear about is how bad they are and they suck. But it doesn’t phase them. They keep working and grinding. Spencer, this coaching staff, everybody. We just keep working and grinding,” Satterfield said.
“We know we have a long way to go but it’s the commitment to work and to develop and improve that we’re all focused on. It’s allowed us to make small gains week to week and hopefully, it continues to show up.”
After a largely slow start to the season, the Gamecocks have been much better on that side of the ball.
South Carolina’s scored a total of 134 points over three games against Charlotte, South Carolina State and Kentucky. Part of that, obviously, is the level of competition against two non-conference opponents, but there have been signs of growth.
The Gamecocks averaged 5.8 yards per play on the road against Kentucky while averaging 9.3 yards per pass attempt and 4.8 yards per carry when adjusting for sack yardage.

“Definitely halfway into the season we could have done a lot of stuff better but we’re at a good spot. We have everything in front of us,” Spencer Rattler said. “We have to come to work everyday, put our head down and grind. I know that sounds boring but that’s what it comes down to. For us, we’re focused on each day getting better and playing game by game.”
Things still aren’t perfect and South Carolina would certainly like to be more consistent while starting and finishing games better.
But things have certainly been better over this three-game win streak.
Part of that has been the development of Spencer Rattler, who has played better of late after an up-and-down start of the year.
Over the last three games, he’s 52-for-69 and averaging 8.3 yards per attempt. He still needs to protect the ball but Satterfield likes Rattler’s comfortability in the offense coming off of the bye.
“I think it’s like anything. The more you can do something the better you’ll get. We talked about communication,” Satterfield said. “Him telling me things he’s comfortable with and going through the fire and through these games and feeling each other out, we’re getting better acquainted on exactly what we can do best. His commitment to development and his commitment to improvement is what you’re seeing right now. He’s one of the greatest young men I’ve been around…We both know we work every single day to be the best we can be.”
