Gamecocks lose commitment from Maryland OL
The South Carolina Gamecocks lost a commitment on Tuesday from Springdale (Maryland) Charles Herbert Flowers offensive lineman Mike Williams.
The 6-foot-5, 310-pounder announced via social media that he was backing away from his pledge.
“After further consideration I would like to announce that I will be decommiting from the University of South Carolina and re-opening my recruitment,” Williams said via Twitter. “Thank you to all the coaches at the University of South Carolina.”
Shane Beamer’s program still holds commitments from four-star offensive linemen Kam Pringle and Josiah Thompson, plus highly-recruited three-star Blake Franks. That trio hails from the Palmetto State.

“What stood out about South Carolina was their fan base and coaching staff,” Williams told On3 at the time of his commitment back in April. “Their fan base is like no other. Even if you aren’t a Gamecock they treat you like family and I loved it. Now the coaching staff aren’t like car salesmen; they aren’t trying to sell South Carolina, they’re trying to make sure that you get the best opportunity to better yourself as a man and I respect that. “My relationship with the coaching staff is great. Me and Coach Teasley have a lot of conversations, not just about football but life. His plan is for me to play tackle and guard.”
Williams is rated by the On3 Industry Ranking as the nation’s number 1286 overall prospect. He’s tabbed as the 37th-best prospect in the state of Maryland and the number 95 offensive tackle nationally.

South Carolina has been slated to get an official visit from Williams the first weekend of June, but it is not immediately clear whether or not that trip is still on the books.
Previously, the three-star prospect had also set official visits to Michigan State (June 9), Virginia Tech (June 16), and Miami (June 23).
The DMV-region lineman visited South Carolina for the first time in January, then returned to Columbia for the Garnet and Black Game at the conclusion of spring practice.
Current Gamecocks freshman EDGE Desmond Umeozulu is a former high school teammate of Williams’ at Flowers, and the USC staff also holds a commitment from four-star defensive back Braydon Lee from the program.
The 2024 South Carolina recruiting class is currently ranked in the top 10 of the On3 Industry Team Recruiting Rankings.
