Nick Emmanwori continues to learn heading into year three with South Carolina
South Carolina defensive back Nick Emmanwori is hungry to take his game to another level in 2024.
“I’m a little older now so I’m trying to find ways to get ahead and stay on my game without (taking a step back),” said Emmanwori.
A Freshman All-American in 2022, Emmanwori continued to be a key part on defense for the Gamecocks last season. Finishing fourth on the team in tackles, he added eight pass break ups and two interceptions. Preparing for his third season with the program, he admits that last year was eye-opening for him.

“The biggest thing I learned is probably you never really get a grasp of the game until you actually play a lot,” said Emmanwori. “Last year that was my first spring (practices). So this is my second spring now, (since) I enrolled in the summer my freshman year… I thought I had things down pat, but I really didn’t. Never really think you have it and just keep staying with an open mindset. Keep trying to find new things you can get better at. Never think that you have things under control.”

Starting in 23 games over the past two years, Emmanwori has quickly become a staple to South Carolina’s defense. But in order to take that next step, his positional coach is looking for more consistency.

“(Nick) had a pretty good freshman year but there were some inconsistencies there,” said defensive backs coach Torrian Gray. “There were some inconsistencies for a good part of last season. The last four games, fives games, I thought were pretty consistent for Nick. How can we (be level) and not have the ups and downs? That’s the goal from that standpoint and just keep hammering the button about being consistent day in and day out. It’s the message to Nick, it’s the message to the group.”
