Nick Emmanwori: 'It's gonna be a crazy defense this year. I'll put my name on it'

Where has the time gone?

It seems like it was just yesterday that a then true freshman Nick Emmanwori was thrusted into action Week 1 in 2022. Flash-forward to now and the Irmo native is heading into his third season with South Carolina. A reality that has slowly begun to sink in with the safety.

“When I first came in (this summer) I never really saw myself being a vet,” Emmanwori told GamecockCentral during an NIL event with Palmetto Autographs. “But now it’s like, you’re a vet. You have younger dudes you have to take care of like Vicari Swain. You’re still trying to get Jalon Kilgore on the same path to have a strong sophomore season. So being vet, I take pride in it. (I’m) a littler smarter, a little older, it’s fun.”

Named named a Freshman All-American in 2022, Emmanwori is one of eight South Carolina defenders returning this season.

“I think I just know how to prepare better now. Like taking care of my body (and) what I need to do for the season. This is gonna be my third fall camp. (I just finished) my second spring so I know what’s going on a little bit more. I can help the younger guys while being able to lead a little better.”

Last season as a sophomore, Emmanwori finished fourth on the team in tackles. Compiling 71 tackles, eight pass breakups, and two interceptions, he played the majority of his snaps at safety but he also saw some time at nickel as well.

Known for playing with a physicality and swagger that has even grabbed the attention of Gamecock great D.J. Swearinger, Emmanwori shed some light on how he’s trying to improve his game this season.

“My versatility on all three levels. Probably get more sacks, a little bit more coverage all over the field. Just showing the NFL what I can do… We have a bunch of dogs in that safety room. Coach (Torrian) Gray has been doing really good with cross training us with playing nickel, free safety, and strong safety. Just being confident at all three positions.”
