It’s hard to keep up with South Carolina multi-sport athlete Nyck Harbor these days. But that’s not just because he’s been setting new personal best times in track and field.

When the true freshman hasn’t been on the track or hitting the books, he’s been putting extra work in at the Long Family Football Operations Center as the wide out prepares for his second season of collegiate football.

“He and LaNorris (Sellers) and other guys (have been) able to do stuff on their own,” explained Beamer. “He and coach (Mike) Furrey being able to do kind of stuff on their own within the rules and whatever Nyck wants to do. When class isn’t conflicting with his schedule, he’s here.”

Despite not practicing this spring, Harbor has been able to attend several practices and meetings. A decision that’s his and one that’s given him an opportunity to not only support his teammates but a chance to take mental reps.

“He’s working around (his) class schedule on that but it works out pretty good for the practice days. He was here (on Tuesday). He’s adamant about being a great football player. It’s not like when he’s here everyone’s like, ‘Oh my God, Nyck’s in the building,’ and all that. It’s just whatcha kind of expect. (You) walk in and there he is sitting in the front or second row in the team meeting right in the middle and involved.”

Making the switch from tight end to wide receiver as a true freshman, Harbor caught 12 passes for 195 yards and a touchdown last season. On the track this spring, he won the men’s 100-meter at the Weems Baskin Invitational with a time of 10.24. That came after running a personal best 10.16 in his first heat. Just this past weekend, he ran a 20.38 in the 200-meter at the Florida relays, which was the second fastest at the event.

“He wants to give his all to track and be the very best he can be there for those guys. But he also wants to be his very best for football and give everything he can to football.”
