Point guard Madisen McDaniel committed to South Carolina, becoming the Gamecocks’ first commitment for 2024.

McDaniel announced her decision at the Under Armour Next Elite 24 game. The game itself was delayed and canceled due to weather.

McDaniel is the third-ranked point guard and 11th-ranked overall prospect in her class. She was once ranked in the top ten of her class but suffered a torn ACL in February 2021 that caused her to drop. It also may have had an impact on her recruitment as teams waited to see how she came back from the injury.

South Carolina got involved with McDaniel relatively late, but she chose the Gamecocks over Tennessee and Georgia. She took her official visit to South Carolina in June.

McDaniel seems to be fully healthy again and averaged 18.6 points, 5.4 assists, 5.2 steals, and 4.3 rebounds as a junior, earning state player of the year honors from MaxPreps and All-Met honors from the Washington Post on top of being the conference player of the year.

McDaniel is listed as 5-5 by ESPN, but USA Basketball lists her at 5-8, which is probably the most accurate measurement. Her uncle is Ronnie Lester, a point guard who played five seasons in the NBA and won a championship with the Los Angeles Lakers. He later became a scout and front office executive. He has mentored McDaniel and help guide her through the recruiting process.

McDaniel’s announcement comes just days before a week-long recruiting shutdown. South Carolina now has between three and six open scholarships remaining for 2024-25.
