Shane Beamer met with the media Sunday night to recap South Carolina’s dismal 38-6 loss to Florida and assess where his team is currently.

Here’s a recap of what the Gamecocks’ head coach had to say:

–First off, congratulate Lamont Paris, Dawn Staley, Shelley and Jamie Smith and Boo Major for winning games this weekend. Disappointed football couldn’t do its part.

–When you can’t run the ball, can’t stop the run and turn the ball over it allows the score to get out of whack. Offensively they weren’t good enough and had some critical penalties as well. Converted the first down but got called back in the second half. Defensively it was the “tale of two halves.” Proud of the defense for battling in the second half.

Did a good job backed up on three possessions to give up just seven points. “Nowhere near good enough as a football team, that’s for sure.” Said they have a good football team but have to coach and play better. Doesn’t want to lose sight of having won 5 of 6 before that.

–You have to dive into this game. In game 10 you can’t sit there and say “that’s one game.” There’s a body of work of 10 games in all three phases to evaluate. Last night, there are good things they could build on and bad things they have to learn from. That’s true last night and every game this year.

–Asked about maybe changing who carries the ball at running back, said Jaheim Bell is a “hell of a running back” and want to use him in multiple ways. Thinks Juju McDowell did well at times well. Need to get CBS and Lloyd back healthy. Perimeter blocking wasn’t good enough and they didn’t control the line of scrimmage. Didn’t get consistent push compared to other games. Had some perimeter plays where they missed blocks. Wasn’t good enough. Have to coach it better and execute better.

–Flordia did a lot of similar things that Missouri and Vanderbilt did from a run game perspective. Have to get off blocks on the perimeter and mixing up calls defensively. Said Florida also ran downhill on them too. UF used more tempo than South Carolina thought they would. Prepped for tempo but used it more this week than maybe South Carolina’s staff originally through. Have to be better because Tennessee is going to use tempo.

–MarShawn Lloyd said he felt “much, much better” than what he felt on Thursday. CBS said he felt “good.” Had a light practice tonight for the older guys and neither did anything today. Mentions he’s “optimistic” both could be available.

–Jakai Moore is a “swing guy” who they’re training at a few spots on the offensive line. Football is important to him and they have a lot of confidence in him. He did some good out there. Tyrese Ross is a “really, really physical football player.” No one questions his physicality and toughness. Biggest thing for him is being consistent in execution. Playing safety, if you’re out of a gap or not in the right spot, it tends to turn into big plays. Ross has gotten better with the consistency of late. He was playing behind other guys and showed his physicality.

–Clayton White is the linebackers coach. Have confidence in all GAs to help out at positions when needed to as well.

–Linebackers were “solid” against Florida. Greene played 63 plays and was “all over the place and did some really good things.” Debo Williams played 54 plays and both are good football players. Greene is sideline-to-sideline and instinctive. Williams is a downhill guy. Brad Johnson had been dealing with the flu this week and was limited. Have to be in the right gap and be where you’re supposed to be. It’s a challenge to do that, he said, when Florida motions and moves the way it does offensively.

–Those reserve backs are continuing to compete and get better. Comes down to being better in practice and more consistent. All three–Carroll, Amos and Miller–are on special teams. Right now they feel Juju McDowell and Jaheim Bell give them the best chance to win.

–Gators had a couple of plays pop out on the perimeter they didn’t execute as well as they would have liked to defensively. Said Gators had a few plays that should have been bottled up and South Carolina didn’t execute and turned into big gains. Got South Carolina on a couple of perimeter runs but did stick to that downhill run game. Did a good job of getting the ball to playmakers.

–Asked about going for two, said they knew they needed three touchdowns and three two-point conversions. Their guy did a nice job of getting upfield and making play. Had a couple of guys coming open in the end zone and on the pass. Gave up too much edge penetration. Thought they had a play to be successful and tried to take advantage of whatever momentum they could snag after that fake field goal.
