Recap: South Carolina track & field updates after Day 2 of nationals
Day 2 of the NCAA Outdoor Championship wrapped up on Thursday. More than a handful of South Carolina women athletes competed in Eugene, OR.
A pair of Gamecocks qualified for Saturday’s final in the 200-meter with their performances on Thursday. JaMeesia Ford won her heat and finished with the second best time posting a 22.14. Jayla Jamison came in second in her heat with a time of 22.35, good enough for fourth overall. Freshman Cynteria James also competed in the 200m event and ran 23.47. Saturday’s 200m final will start at 4:07 p.m. PT (7:07 p.m. ET).

In the 4x100m relay, South Carolina came in fourth overall to advance to Saturday’s final with a time of 42.66. That team consist of James, Ford, Zaya Akins, and Jahnile Registre. The final for the 4x100m relay on Saturday will begin at 2:32 p.m. PT.
The Gamecocks also were represented in the 4x400m relay and came in second overall. Winning their heat with a time of 3:27.10, the team includes Chelangat, Akins, Ford, and Registre. Saturday’s final for the 4x400m relay will be the final event of the day. It’s slated to start at 4:51 p.m. PT.

Additionally, Akins finished in 20th place after running 52.36 in the 400m while Teresa Cherotich came in 18th place in the 3K Steeplechase with a time of 10:06.10. Judy Kosgei took part in the 1500m and ran it in 4:14.97 to place her 19th overall while Chelangat ran the 800m in 2:04.50 to earn 30th place.
Friday will feature the finals for many events for the men and a pair of South Carolina athletes will be in action. On Wednesday, Anass Eyssai ran 3:39.75 in the 1500m. Despite finishing 13th overall, because he came in second in his heat, Eyssai advanced to Friday’s finals. That will take place at 6:12 p.m. PT. Channing Ferguson will be competing in Friday’s high jump finals at 5:30 p.m PT. Last year he came in 14th place at nationals in that event.
Friday’s portion of the NCAA Outdoor Championship will air live on ESPN2/ESPN+ while Saturday will air on ESPN. Below, is a full schedule of this weekend’s events.
