Even after the season has well expired, the injury bug is still finding its way to Columbia. On Wednesday, head coach Shane Beamer shared the latest on who’s banged up.

While there hasn’t been a game played since Nov. 25, some of the players on the team have used this time off to get procedures and surgeries done. In preparation for the 2024 season, Beamer addressed three players who underwent surgery in the offseason.

“Sidney Fugar had a little procedure done, Chase Sweigart had a minor procedure done yesterday, David Spaulding had a minor procedure done,” Beamer said. “None of them are long term that we expect to keep them out of spring practice, just some things to get cleaned up.”

Fugar, who transferred from Western Illinois before this past season, was used to fill in missing pieces on the offensive line. In the 2023 season, he played in 10 games, starting just four. He saw his role diminish as the year wore on with the emergence of young freshmen Tree Babalade and Trovon Baugh.

Redshirt freshman Chase Sweigart did not see any game action for South Carolina in his first season due to injury. He’s a walk-on in his second year with the program. He was an all-state selection as a senior at nearby Chapin High School.

Since to South Carolina transferring in 2021, Spaulding has continually struggled with injuries. He missed almost the entire 2022 season with a foot injury. He recorded just seven tackles in four games in 2022.

In 2023, Spaulding made seven tackles and played in five games. It’s been an injury-riddled past two years as he looks to bounce back in 2024.
