Saturday, in the aftermath of South Carolina’s 13-point loss to Missouri, Spencer Rattler said in his press conference the Gamecocks didn’t have a “good enough” idea of what do offensively.

Roughly 24 hours after that comment was made, Shane Beamer had a chance to address it and said improving there is something the Gamecocks can “absolutely” do.

“I met with Spencer and we talked about that comment. I understood where he was coming from. We didn’t go into that game uncertain about things,” Beamer said Sunday night. “We had a great week of practice, a great mental week of practice with what we were asking our guys to do. I’m aware Spencer said it, but he and I met on it and don’t think it’s an issue.”

South Carolina is coming off a deflating loss to Missouri where the Gamecocks’ offense averaged just 3.8 yards per play, 5.7 yards per pass attempt while averaging a sack-adjusted 3.2 yards per carry.

Rattler was sacked four times for 28 yards and the offense had just four drives gain more than 20 yards.

We just have to get better at everything. Credit to MIssouri, they gave us tough looks all night long with their blitzes, their pressures and the way they got after us. It was tough to get the dropback pass going,” Rattler said postgame.

“I don’t feel like we had a good enough idea of knowing what to do. I say that’s what we need to get better at preparing and knowing what to do.”

Saturday was probably the worst offensive performance of the season, excluding Georgia, while the Gamecocks struggled to muster much of anything.

South Carolina didn’t push the ball down the field, relying heavily on short, perimeter passes or screenplays. Rattler completed 20 of his 30 attempts but averaged less than six yards per attempt.  It was by far the lowest of the season.

Sunday, Beamer also said the Gamecocks aren’t looking to change play callers right now and mentioned the quarterback position is under constant competition, like every other on the roster.

“We’re constantly competing. We’re competing at every position. That’s always the case. Luke’s done a good job. So has Spencer,” Beamer said. “People want to talk about some of the plays. Spencer made some big-time plays last night as well. We have to continue to help him and be better around him.”

Backup Luke Doty has played in four games this season and is 10-for-14 for 146 yards (10.4 yards per attempt) late in games. He’s thrown two touchdowns while tossing two picks.

Doty has also rushed five times for 63 yards and a score. Beamer was also complimentary Sunday night of Doty’s progress in year two in Marcus Satterfield’s offense.

“It’s understanding mentally cause it’s year two in the offense. He’s a great sounding board for Spencer. He’s great on the sidelines in the game,” Beamer said. “Just from a physical standpoint, seeing him practice and the confidence he plays with and the throws he makes. He continues to get better and better. I’m proud of his work.”
