Midway through year three of the Shane Beamer era, no one is happy with South Carolina’s record. But that doesn’t mean Beamer isn’t confident about where the program is at in the grand scheme of things.

“I think the state of the program is fantastic right now,” Beamer said on Tuesday. “Are we happy with being 2-3? No. Did we expect to be 2-3? No. Am I discourage or think we’ve had any step back? No.”

“Not to go back to the last two years but based on the way most of you guys projected us the last two seasons we, without a doubt, overachieved in 2021 and 2022. I think the natural progression in their minds is, ‘Okay, they won seven and they won eight, now they’re just supposed to win ten or nine.’ We still may, who knows. There’s a lot of football left.”

Not including this season, in the 115 years of South Carolina football, last season marked just the 13th time that USC had won eight or more games in the regular season. Only five times have they been able to replicate that the following season.

“I look at just the big picture as far as where we were when I got here in December of 2020 (and) what we’ve done as far as a culture standpoint and what we’ve done from a recruiting standpoint, the success that we’ve had on the field. I get it, ultimately I’m judged not season-to-season but week-to-week. You’re judged on wins and losses and right now in 2023 we’re not good enough because we’re 2-3. But, I also look at the big picture and the progress that we have made since we got here and the football that’s left to be played in this season as well.”

Five of those seven regular season games will be played at Williams-Brice Stadium. A place the Gamecocks have gone 14-2 under Beamer.

“I get it, you don’t get a six-year rebuilding plan. You’re coaching at the highest level and you’re expected to win. But I also know how far we’ve come since December of 2020. We’re just scratching the surface of where we’re going to be at a program also.”
