Shane Beamer: LaNorris Sellers starting QB coming out of spring practice
With less than four months to go until South Carolina’s season opener, Shane Beamer has made an announce about who’s starting at quarterback for the Gamecocks. Sort of.
“I’ll tell you guys what I told LaNorris and all the quarterbacks coming out of spring practice. ‘Coming out of spring practice, LaNorris (Sellers) is our starting quarterback,'” said Beamer during a Welcome Home Tour event Monday in Florence. “But, just like all of our positions, we’ll continue to compete at all positions.”

The news shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. Sellers had a strong spring, which was capped off with an impressive spring game performance. Yet, like Beamer has said in the past, he wants everybody to compete to not only earn their job, but to keep it as well.
“So, I told Robby Ashford, the moment that I say that at a Gamecock Club event, the headline’s going to be, ‘Beamer names LaNorris Sellers starting quarterback,'” Beamer shared. “LaNorris is the starting quarterback coming out of spring, but like I told LaNorris and like I told Robby, Robby did a great job during spring practice along with our other quarterbacks. LaNorris did a great job and I expect LaNorris to continue to compete and earn that position as well.”

While who starts at quarterback will almost always steal the headlines, Beamer made it clear that this isn’t anything new for them with how they handle competition at positions.
“Going into 2022, nobody thought that Nick Emmanwori and DQ Smith were gonna be starting safeties. We had two seniors who they were behind. We got into Week 2 and they became starters. So, it’s the same thing. We don’t all of a sudden name someone — Debo Williams as our starting linebacker coming out of spring practice. He needs to continue to have a great summer to continue to be the starting linebacker. I had those conversations with those guys the Monday after the spring game.”
Beamer shared that the Gamecocks will report on Aug. 1 for fall camp. Practice No.1 is tentatively schedule to begin on Aug. 2.
