Shane Beamer: Not going to 'overreact' to offense after week one

Shane Beamer understands there’s plenty of work still to do for South Carolina offensively.

But he’s not going to overreact, he said, to the Gamecocks’ season-opening performance and get back to work trying to get that group better.

“It wasn’t that bad, guys. We just beat a pretty good Sun Belt team by three touchdowns at home and didn’t play great on offense,” he said Sunday night. “We ain’t sitting around here feeling sorry for ourselves like, ‘What the heck is wrong with the offense?’ We didn’t play great last night but we had a hell of a win and can’t wait to get back to work.”

While Beamer isn’t going to be discouraged by the Gamecocks offensively, there is still some work to be done.

The Gamecocks scored 19 points outside of two blocked punts and a pair of two-point conversions. Spencer Rattler led the team down on a pair of touchdown drives, both ending with MarShawn Lloyd finding the end zone.

But South Carolina struggled in the running game, averaging just over three yards per carry when adjusting for sack yards.

Spencer Rattler averaged just over six yards per pass attempt and the Gamecocks went 3-for-14 on third down.

“We all had a hand in it: coaches, quarterbacks, offensive line, running backs, sometimes it’s a quarterback handing the ball off when he should pull it. Sometimes it’s a quarterback got confused on coverage. The interception on the second half, we can talk about throwing the ball a little high over AB’s head but the ball should have been thrown to the slant down on the boundary,” Beamer said.

“The offensive line certainly had their hand in a lot of it. We didn’t do a great job handling their movement. Running back wise, we missed a couple blitz pickups or stayed in to protect when we didn’t need to. Receiver-wise we had some sloppy routes. Receiver-wise we got our butts kicked on the perimeter blocking. Tight end-wise we had some sloppy routes and got our butts kicked on the perimeter. We all had a hand in it.”

South Carolina will have to adjust and improve quickly with a road test at No. 19 Arkansas looming next weekend.

Things are never as good as they seem or as bad as they seem. They’re certainly not as bad as some people want to make them out to be. It’s game one. We’ll learn from it. We’ll be better. It starts with coaches. I’m not sitting here blaming players,” Beamer said. “Those are things that happened. It all starts with us as coaches. As coaches we’re either coaching it or allowing it to happen. There are things that happened last night that we allowed to happen and we have to coach it better.”

Beamer mentioned postgame Saturday night potentially narrowing some things down to make guys more comfortable.

“We always talk about different guys learn different ways. Not every player learns sitting in a meeting room and hearing the coach talk about it. Some players need more one-on-one time, some players need more group time, some players need to walk through it on the practice field,” he said. “Some players are better at live reps on the practice field. So just continue to try and to be better teachers. Just to continue to emphasize it as well.”
