Shane Beamer shares South Carolina spring transfer portal plan

South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer has spoken previously about the Gamecocks needing additional help on the defensive line.
And with spring ball in the books, and the spring transfer portal now fully in focus, Beamer reiterated on Monday at the Florence stop on the Welcome Home Tour that the d-line is where the program will likely spend its resources during this window.
“Defensive line — defensive end and defensive tackle — that’s a position that just numbers wise, we’re not where we need to be right now, just overall depth,” Beamer said. “So I felt that way going into the spring that that might be a position that we look to add.
“If we don’t, it’s okay. But at the same time, when you’ve had some injuries up there and you don’t want to necessarily rely on true freshmen at defensive tackle, that makes you think about things.”

Beamer also reiterated the same thing he’s told his players: that the need at a particular position doesn’t mean he doesn’t believe in the guys in the room right now. But South Carolina needs additional depth and competition at certain spots, the d-line the most glaring one.
The fifth-year head coach added that he does feel better about the defensive line now than he did at the beginning of the spring.
“(Gabe Brownlow-Dindy) had a great spring at defensive tackle,” Beamer said. “Monkell Goodwine had a great spring at defensive tackle, Nick Barrett. And then at the EDGE position, we all know about Dylan (Stewart) but Bryan Thomas and Desmond (Umeozulu) and Anthony Addison from Sumter, who we’re really excited about.

“So seeing what those guys did in the spring makes you feel better about up front on defense but still concerning at certain spots, just overall depth when it comes to playing in the SEC.”

Beamer ran through the other positions on defense and then the entire offense, indicating that he didn’t feel they necessarily needed to add from the portal at positions other than the defensive line.
That includes special teams, where the staff entered spring thinking it might need to add a kicker or punter but has now decided it won’t be necessary.
“I met with all of our (kickers), Peyton Argent, Mason Love and William Joyce, and that’s what I conveyed to them is coming out of spring, we don’t feel like we need to attack the portal for a kicker/punter,” Beamer said. “Now, I’m not saying a billion percent for sure that we’re not, but based on the way that those guys kicked and punted in the spring — we’re young and that’s a little concerning as you go into the season — but those guys are made of the right stuff and eager to kind of see them take the next step through the summer as well.”
The spring transfer portal window opened last Wednesday and remains open through this Friday. Non-graduates are required to enter the portal by that deadline but do not have to make a decision on their next school by then.
