Shane Beamer shares what's different about Spencer Rattler this year
With a year in Columbia under his belt, Spencer Rattler returns to South Carolina with plenty of experience. Experience that has Shane Beamer optimistic about his star quarterback.
“I think Spencer has grown in so many ways, as a person, player, and leader,” said Shane Beamer. “Even since January when Dowell (Loggains) came in and the relationship they’ve built and how he’s helped him in such a short period of time. The way Spencer finished last season on the field gave him great confidence. It’s not that he didn’t have it already but it really gave him even more confidence going into 2023. He made a decision that was best for him and his family to return and he’s been awesome since he came back in January.”

In his first season at South Carolina, Rattler passed for 3,026 yards, 18 touchdowns, 12 interceptions and had a completion percentage of 66.2. Ten of those 18 touchdown passes came in this final three games, which included throwing for six against No. 5 Tennessee.
“Not only has he been trying to improve as a quarterback but he also wants to be an even better leader than what he was last season. He was a great leader last year. He was voted a captain by his teammates. He knows he’s got a lot to work on and will continue to but we’re glad he’s our quarterback and we’re eager to see him take that next step as he continues to grow.”

That growth also extends to having a better feel for his surroundings. Something Beamer hopes will allow him to pick up where he left off towards the end of last season.
“Just being comfortable as well. Last year at this time he had never played a game in Williams-Brice Stadium. I think he obviously has a better understanding of what that’s all about with having gone through a season already in the SEC. No disrespect to the Big 12 but it’s different than the Big 12.”
