One week ago, South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer stood at the podium in the media room and said that due to injuries and transfers, the Gamecocks needed to increase the depth and competition in their EDGE room.

About 48 hours later, Charlotte transfer Demon Clowney signed with the Gamecocks.

And exactly a week after first mentioning the need, Beamer stood at the same podium and discussed the newest addition to the program.

“Certainly (adds) depth, for sure,” Beamer said Tuesday. “Got a neat story. Brought him in on a visit and (was) really just trying to learn as much about him as you can and his story and his journey. He’s got a fascinating story, for sure. Good size, good ability, really impressed a lot of people in the building when he was here on his visit. And a guy that, certainly as you guys know, we need to increase the depth and competition in that room, and he gives us the ability to do that.”

For those living under a rock, Clowney is of course the younger cousin of Gamecock Great Jadeveon Clowney.

The younger Clowney joins the South Carolina roster after two seasons at Charlotte where he played in 22 games tallying 10.0 tackles for a loss and 4.5 sacks.

This past season, Clowney collected 26 tackles, 6.0 tackles for a loss, and 2.0 sacks after logging 33 tackles, 4.0 tackles for a loss and 2.5 sacks the year prior.

Clowney’s time in the Queen City came after three seasons with Ole Miss where he played in just eight games and had 12 total tackles.

Clowney signed with Louisville via the portal in December but never suited up for the Cardinals, re-entering last month before signing with Carolina last Thursday.

He should have one season of eligibility remaining.

The 6-foot-4, 255-pounder will look for a fresh start in his return to the SEC under the tutelage of Gamecocks assistant Sterling Lucas.

A former four-star prospect, Clowney initially signed with the Rebels as the No. 240 overall prospect in the 2020 class, according to the On3 Industry Rankings, which is a proprietary algorithm that compiles ratings and rankings from all four primary recruiting media services.

He was ranked as the No. 14 EDGE in the class and the No. 11 overall player from the state of Maryland, hailing from Baltimore (Md.) St. Frances Academy.

South Carolina EDGE Wendell Gregory recently announced that he would enter the portal while EDGE Jaylen Brown, a transfer from Missouri, is out for the spring with an injury.
