After a thrilling end to year two in which his Gamecocks program knocked off a pair of top ten teams, Shane Beamer realizes that many will anticipate his team taking another step forward in the win column in 2023.
For Beamer, he wants to remain consistent in how he judges his team’s success in year three, and that does not necessarily mean just looking at wins and losses.

“I know everybody wants me to put a numerical number on that, how many wins we need and all that. For me, it’s just continuing to make progress,” he told On3’s JD PicKell in a one-on-one video interview this week.
Beamer’s metric for the Gamecocks, as it has been from the start of his tenure, relates to reaching potential.
“Make progress, get a little better than where we are right now as a program, then get the very most out of the 2023 team that we can,” he explained.

While the Gamecocks scored a road rivalry win to close out the regular season – ensuring the Clemson Tigers could not make the College Football Playoff – and also put up 63 points in a huge win over Tennessee, not everything went according to plan last season.

USC was listless at home in a loss to Missouri, was not competitive against eventual national champion Georgia, and laid an egg on the road against Florida. While Beamer wants everyone to remember just how much the Gamecocks accomplished last season, he has not forgotten those performances, either.
“In 2022, we did a lot of really good things. Obviously, there are a lot of things that we could have done better,” Beamer said. “We haven’t arrived by any stretch of the imagination. We’ve got a lot of work to do.”

The Gamecocks’ 2023 schedule is, in Beamer’s words, “brutal”. A neutral site game against Drake Maye and UNC opens the slate before Carolina embarks on its typically salty SEC schedule. There are road contests at Georgia, Tennessee, Missouri, and Texas A&M. The season ends as usual with a matchup against Clemson.
“We’re excited about (it) as competitors,” said Beamer. “At the end of the season, let’s look up, and if I feel like we maximized the potential of the group of young men that we have, to me, that’s a successful season. I say it all the time, and I believe it, to be the very, very best that we can be. Let’s maximize the potential of the 2023 football season.”
