Shane Beamer talks Aggies' quarterbacks, early returns on Texas A&M

South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer remembers vividly Conner Weigman’s recruitment.
Back then, when Weigman was early on in his recruitment, Beamer was at Oklahoma with Lincoln Riley, who was heavily pursuing Weigman in the 2022 class.
Weigman ultimately chose Texas A&M. And now there is some potential the former five-star quarterback will make his first-career start Saturday night against the Beamer-led Gamecocks.

“I remember Lincoln Riley, he really didn’t offer a ton of quarterbacks. There were one or two quarterbacks a year, maybe, he would offer scholarships too that he was high on,” Beamer said. “I remember Conner was one Lincoln really, really, really liked. That says everything to me.”
On3 considered Weigman the No. 29 player for his class and the No. 4 quarterback prospect coming out of high school last season.
The hope more than likely for the Aggies was the five-star would be able to ease into college behind veterans like Haynes King and Max Johnson. But that might not be the case.
Johnson left a game a few weeks ago against Mississippi State hurt. Alabama banged up King, who was the starter going into the year.
King’s availability for Saturday is still unknown, which means there’s a possibility Weigman starts against the Gamecocks.
“You’re always preparing for multiple quarterbacks. You’re always aware of who’s on the roster as well. Coach (Jimbo) Fisher has a lot of confidence in King, having made him the starter last year and at the beginning of this season. He’s played some good football for them,” Beamer said.
“We really, really liked Conner when I was at Oklahoma with Lincoln. He’s somebody we were excited about. You always prepare for multiple quarterbacks. We’re going to run our system. We’re not going to change unless it’s two radically different styles of plays. Coach Fisher is going to run his offense and do what they do.”

This season King is completing 58.2 percent of his passes for 6.9 yards an attempt. He has five touchdowns to five interceptions.
According to Pro Football Focus, Weigman hasn’t logged a snap this season.
Whoever is starting, though, will lead what’s still a very talented Texas A&M against the Gamecocks.
The Aggies are fresh off signing the No. 1 recruiting class in the country. While they’re still young, they certainly look the part of a formidable team.
“To me, they’re a young team that continues to get better. I know they’ve had some injuries at the quarterback position. But I go back to last year watching them in pregame warmups. Across the board, as a football team, they look like what you want a football team to look like,” Beamer said. “They have size and length in the secondary. They’re young at a lot of spots and playing a lot of true freshmen but continue to get better each and every week.”
Each team is coming off a bye week, the Gamecocks beating Kentucky by two scores while A&M’s upset bid over Alabama came up four points short.
“They’ve had a week to get rested and healthy and better themselves as a football team. I’m sure we’ll see the best version of A&M coming here on Saturday night.”
