This time of year is prime for movement at the professional football level, and South Carolina lost one of their key defensive analysts a few days ago.

Shaq Wilson left the Gamecocks to be an assistant defensive line coach for the New York Jets. It’s a chance for him to take the next step in his coaching career after over two years at South Carolina.

“Congratulations to Shaq and I’m excited for our young coaches who get opportunities. I don’t want to lose them. But the guys who’ve left this program left not because they were unhappy and trying to get out of here. They’ve left for promotions in their career. I’m excited for Shaq. No one loves South Carolina more,” Shane Beamer said.

“I was in Mexico on spring break when he called to tell me he had been offered the job. He was emotional on the phone telling me he was taking the job because of how much he loves this place. What a great opportunity for him. I’m excited for Shaq.”

While the move is undoubtedly good for Wilson and what’s next for him, it leaves the Gamecocks with another void on the analyst side of things about halfway through spring practice.

South Carolina also lost DeVonte Holloman this offseason, who was a defensive analyst as well. The former Gamecock defender leaving to go be the head coach at Pinewood Prep in Summerville.

With Wilson gone, the Gamecocks don’t have an immediate need to fill the analyst role with the other analysts helping out in what Beamer called a “by committee” process.

“Fortunately, we’re not doing any breakdowns for an opponent we’re playing this Saturday. It’s our own team. There’s not quite the workload you need from an analyst standpoint. He assisted Jimmy (Lindsey) and Sterling (Lucas) on that defensive line,” Beamer said.

“Those guys are fine right now in what they’re doing. So we really haven’t had to have anyone pick up the slack. We’ll look. We lost DeVonte. DeVonte got an opportunity. So with DoVonte moving on and Shaq moving on, there are a couple of positions there on defense.”

Beamer said South Carolina already plans on elevating graduate assistant Trey Money to an analyst position sooner rather than later. Money has served in a graduate assistant role while working closely with defensive coordinator Clayton White and the linebackers.

Because there’s not an imminent rush to fill those analyst slots in the spring, Beamer and White will reconvene after April 15–when spring practice is over–to figure out the next steps for replacing Wilson and Holloman.

“We have some flexibility on that defensive staff as well. Clayton and I have talked about what we want to do with that side of the ball next,” Beamer said.

“He and I just want to get through spring ball and see what our needs are and where we can find somebody–if there is anybody–that can best help our defense and our football program here. We’ve talked to some people about some positions on the defensive side of the ball and we’ll see where things go.”
