Spencer Rattler certainly showed what he could do for South Carolina at the tail end of the regular season last year, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty to work on this preseason.

It’s one of the reasons Rattler came back, among a few reasons, to try and get better and help the Gamecocks before exploring professional opportunities.

There’s a lot of new around Rattler–including a new offensive coordinator–but Shane Beamer seems to like where his quarterback is after one week of training camp.

“Really pleased with where he is right now. I think he’s grown as a leader over the summer and over the year. He’s got a great relationship with Dowell (Loggains) and the way that they work together,” Beamer said.

“His knowledge of the offense, there is some carryover from what we did last year. But terminology-wise, there’s a lot that’s different as well. So there are things that he’s had to learn, but he seems very confident.”

Rattler spent all of spring learning the ins and outs of Loggains’ new system and the two spent that time and the summer trying to figure out what best works with this offense and with Rattler at the helm.

Saturday was the first real dry run of the offense since the spring with South Carolina scrimmaging at Williams-Brice for two hours and Rattler getting all of the reps with the first team.

“We wanted to do that today. He needed the work. He’s got a lot of new pieces around him, a lot of guys that were here in spring practice, but then some new guys, freshmen that are here as well. So we thought it was critical. We treated it like a game. So coaches were on the sideline,” Beamer said.

“We had headphones, we were signaling plays in. So just the mechanics or signaling plays and calling plays from the sideline like we will in a game. So it just felt like from a mechanic standpoint, he needed to be out there and get all the work.”

It was good for Rattler to get used to how the Gamecocks and Loggains will operate during the season.

“I was cognizant today of the play clock and being able to communicate and get things in and call stuff and didn’t have any issues with that. And he did a great job. So I think really, it’s command of the offense. He’s a competitor, and he wanted to be out there today,” Beamer said.

“We had some drives where the drive was over and I was going to send a new group out there. He wanted to stay out there. Like, ‘Hey, let me get some more plays and things like that.’ That’s just his mentality, like where he is right now.”

The other four scholarship quarterbacks–Luke Doty, Colten Gauthier, Tanner Bailey and LaNorris Sellers–rotated in with the second and third groups. The backup quarterback is still up for grabs, and a trio of guys were live in the scrimmage with the ability to get hit.

“We made LaNorris, Colton and Tanner live today when we were tackling them as we had done previously. And that was good work for those guys,” Beamer said. “Also to understand that there’s a pass rush in the SEC. But also for our defensive players to be able to have to tackle those guys also.”
