For the first time since the Clemson game, Shane Beamer was able to update the status of a few banged-up South Carolina players.

Speaking on his call-in show as the Gamecocks go through bowl practice, Beamer spoke about the team’s injuries.

The biggest question mark heading to the bowl is Josh Vann, who exited the Clemson game with a knee injury.

Beamer said while Vann’s injury isn’t as serious as initially thought he is “very, very questionable” going into the bowl game. South Carolina’s staff is trying to be smart about playing him while understanding he does potentially have a future in football.

This season Vann has played in all 12 games, hauling in 18 catches for 296 yards and also three touchdowns.

The Gamecocks (8-4) haven’t used Vann as much as last season, but he’s been the go-to punt returner with 151 yards on 10 punt returns this season.

Outside of that, Beamer mentioned the only other bang-up is defensive back Devonni Reed who is banged up and they’ll see what happens with him as the bowl approaches. Christian Beal-Smith will practice Tuesday, Terrell Dawkins has practiced as has Wyatt Campbell.

South Carolina began bowl practice Thursday and will practice in Columbia until Dec. 22. The Gamecocks will also break after Thursday’s practice for Christmas.

They’ll reconvene in Jacksonville for Gator Bowl preparations on Christmas night (Dec. 25). South Carolina will begin on-site practices in Jacksonville the next morning.

South Carolina is scheduled to practice all week in Jacksonville. The schedule will mirror a typical game week. Kickoff against Notre Dame is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET on Dec. 30. ABC will televise the game.

Zacch Pickens, Darius Rush and Cam Smith have officially opted out of the bowl game.

MarShawn Lloyd, Jaheim Bell, Austin Stogner and Gilber Edmond were all impact players in the bowl who entered the portal the last few weeks.

It’s a busy stretch for the Gamecocks, who have a few more local practices before the break. South Carolina just hired an offensive coordinator, hiring away Arkansas tight ends coach Dowell Loggains to take over for the departing Marcus Satterfield.

The Gamecocks will also ink the majority of its 2023 recruiting class this week with the potential to add more players this week as well. As of Monday morning, South Carolina’s class ranks No. 18 nationally and eighth-best in the SEC.
