Source: Pete Lembo not pursuing Towson opening

Despite rumors floating around on Monday, Gamecock Central has been told by a reliable source that South Carolina special teams coordinator/associate head coach Pete Lembo is not pursuing the head coach opening at Towson.
Hired by Shane Beamer in Dec. of 2020, Lembo has helped turn South Carolina into one of the best special teams programs in the country. USC’s special teams efficiency this season is 82.2, which ranks first in FBS.

The Gamecocks rank No.3 in FBS for blocked kicks with six. They rank sixth in kickoff return average and have one of the best punters and place kickers in the country. Punter Kai Kroeger 2022 is one of ten finalists for the Ray Guy Award, which recognizes the nation’s top punter. Meanwhile, Mitch Jeter hasn’t missed a kick, following in the footsteps of USC’s all-time scoring leader Parker White.
“He’s obviously phenomenal from a special teams standpoint,” said Shane Beamer, earlier this month about Lembo. “He and Stanton Weber (USC Special Teams Analyst) do a great job. It’s so beneficial to me when you have a guy who doesn’t coach a position. He’s able to coach just special teams and then he’s able to interact with different coaches on the staff and the players as well and develop relationships.”
