Antwane Wells Jr. one of 'Elite 11' jumping from FCS to FBS
South Carolina is expecting incoming transfer wide receiver Antwane Wells Jr. to provide an instant impact to its receiving corps and On3.com’s Mike Huguenin agrees.
Huguenin has been diving into the transfer portal and listing the players he believes will make a big impact for their new squads in 2022.
Today Huguenin focused on players who are making the jump from FCS to FBS ball and Wells landed among his ‘Elite 11’ players who will be key at their next stop.
Said Huguenin of Wells:
The buzz: Antwane Wells (6-1, 204) played just two seasons at James Madison and was a fulltime starter for one, but he left JMU as one of the most productive receivers in school history. In his two seasons, Wells had 116 receptions (ninth in school history) for 1,853 yards (ninth) and 21 TDs (third). Wells, from the Richmond, Va., area, was a first-team All-Colonial pick in 2021, when he also received some All-America notice after a season in which he had 83 catches, 1,250 yards and 15 touchdowns. Wells’ addition means all of a sudden, South Carolina looks as if it could have a dangerous passing attack. Leading receiver Josh Vann decided to stay for one more season, TE Jaheim Bell came on strong at the end of the season and the Gamecocks also added QB Spencer Rattler and TE Austin Stogner from Oklahoma via the transfer portal.

Coach regrets leaving LSU
Wells chose South Carolina over offers from UNC, Miami, Mississippi State and Virginia Tech.
“It seemed like a family-oriented team,” Wells said at the time of his commitment. “When I went down there, I really felt the love. They fed me well. And just the offensive scheme they run, I feel like it fits me best.”
He also liked the relationship he was able to build with wide receivers coach Justin Stepp.
“Coach Stepp, that’s my guy; he cares a lot about me,” Wells said. “He’s really caring. Ever since I met him, he treated me like I was already on the team. He made sure I was straight every day. Even after the visit, he called me every day just to check in on me. He’s a very caring guy.”
Wells is already on campus and will go through spring practice with the Gamecocks.
