South Carolina baseball star named to another preseason All-American squad
South Carolina baseball star Ethan Petry is a preseason All-American by D1Baseball. The D1Baseball staff included the right-handed slugger as a 2nd team outfielder. The national college baseball outlet announced their preseason All-American teams on Tuesday.
Petry’s spot on the team comes as no surprise. He has earned All-American honors both as a freshman in 2023 and as a sophomore in 2024. D1Baseball honored him as an All-American in 2023 but left him off of their list in 2024. Petry must have been close in 2024, however, as several other outlets considered him an All-American.
During his South Carolina baseball career, Petry has put up eye-popping numbers. With a two-year slash line of .341/.471/.686/1.157, Petry has been one of the top hitters in the country. He has smacked 44 home runs and 18 doubles en route to 112 runs and 128 RBI. Petry has 150 total hits (63 extra-base hits) in just 122 starts. He has also made his way on base 116 additional times via walks and HBPs.
This year, Petry doesn’t have a 100% defined position. The big right-hander has been an outfielder for most of his South Carolina playing days. However, he has played innings at first base and even a few at third. This fall, new Gamecock head coach Paul Mainieri wouldn’t commit to where he wanted to play No. 20. He did, though, say he felt pleased with his play at third base and right field during practice and scrimmages. No matter how Mainieri deploys Petry, the future MLB Draft 1st round pick will play and will hit in the middle of the order.
