South Carolina baseball star junior Ethan Petry is no stranger to personal accolades. In two years as a Gamecock, he found himself on All-American teams in both 2023 and 2024. Now, heading into 2025, he’s picking up quite a few pieces of preseason recognition, as well. He has made preseason All-American squads and has seen his name in the first round of multiple 2025 MLB Draft mocks. Earlier this week, the SEC coaches selected him to the preseason All-SEC 1st team.

On Friday, Petry earned another preseason All-American honor from the National College Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) and a spot on the preseason watch list for the Golden Spikes Award.

The preseason All-American spot comes as a 3rd team outfielder. Petry, who has played right field for the majority of his South Carolina career, is expected to be the man chosen to start at first base this season. However, head coach Paul Mainieri has said he could see time in right or even at third base. No matter where he plays, though, Petry will hit in the heart of the USC order.

The Gamecocks will be counting on that middle-of-the-order production this season, and his offensive prowess is also what earned him a spot on the Golden Spikes watch list. He is one of 50 Division-I players on the list (55 total players) and one of 16 from the SEC.

During his South Carolina baseball career, Petry has hit for a ridiculous .341/.471/.686/1.157 slash line. He has totaled 44 home runs, 18 doubles, 128 RBI, 112 runs, and 150 hits. He’s also gotten on base 116 additional times via walks and HBPs. Petry’s 44 long balls already tie him for fifth in program history, despite the fact he has only played two years in garnet and black.

Petry and the Gamecocks are just one week away from starting the 2025 season. The first year of the Paul Mainieri era in Columbia will start officially on Friday, February 14th.

The Sacred Heart Pioneers will come to town for a three-game series that will begin with a 4:00 p.m. first pitch on Friday. Senior right-hander Dylan Eskew will get the opening day start on the mound. Matthew Becker will get the ball for game two, but Mainieri hasn’t revealed the finale’s starter. Game two will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, and game three’s first pitch is at Noon on Sunday.

Fans who can’t make it out to Founders Park this weekend can stream all three contests on SEC Network+.
