South Carolina baseball star named preseason All-American

Petry’s inclusion comes as no surprise. In two years as a Gamecock, the big right-handed hitter has been an All-American in both 2023 and 2024. He set several South Carolina baseball freshman records and is closing in on some career marks, as well.
This season, the first under new Gamecock head coach Paul Mainieri, Petry is expected to be a star once again. However, he could play multiple roles for USC this spring.
Most of his Gamecock action has come in right field, though, Petry has played some at first base and DH. This fall, Petry also saw some time at third base, and Mainieri liked what he saw from him at the hot corner. The Florida native arrived in Columbia as a third baseman but hadn’t played the position since the beginning of the 2023 season. It’s too early now to know exactly how Mainieri will utilize Petry in the field, but his ability to play both the corner outfield and the corner infield will give Carolina some added flexibility in 2025.

No matter where he plays on defense, Petry will be a stalwart in the middle of the Gamecocks’ lineup.

During his South Carolina baseball career, Ethan Petry has put up ridiculous numbers. The Gamecock slugger has a career slash line of .341/.471/.686/1.157. He’s also smacked 44 home runs, 18 doubles, and a triple. Petry has scored 112 runs, knocked in 128 RBI, and walked 84 times. He likely will be a 1st-round pick in this summer’s MLB Draft.
