South Carolina baseball hires Chris Gordon as new Director of Player Development
South Carolina baseball has hired Chris Gordon to be the new Director of Player Development, the program announced on Monday. Gordon will also serve as the Director of Analytics and Camp Coordinator for the Gamecocks.
“Chris is going to be a valuable member of our staff. In today’s game, analytics, technology, and statistics play a vital role in player development, recruiting, scouting reports, and game strategy,” head coach Paul Mainieri said in a statement. “Chris’ proficiency in all of the developmental systems we have at our access such as Trackman, Bats Video System, Edgertronic Cameras, Newtforce Mounds and Hitting Force Plates, Rapsodo, and Blast Motion for hitters is outstanding and his ability to analyze the data to make recommendations to the coaches will be critical. In addition, Chris will be tasked with growing our camp program at Founders Park and his significant experience in the past as a camp director will lead to great success on this front.”
Gordon replaces Mike Current, who was the previous Director of Player Development under former head coach Mark Kingston. Current has moved onto Creighton and will follow Kingston, who was hired as the Blue Jays’ associate head coach/coach-in-waiting.
Gordon previously spent the last two years at Texas, where he was responsible for working with both hitters and pitchers. But he was elevated to an on-field role in 2024 and worked only with the Longhorns’ pitching staff.

Before that, Gordon spent six seasons at Duke from 2017-22. He became the Blue Devils’ pitching coach in February 2021 after four seasons as a Special Assistant to the Head Coach. Gordon was also the pitching coach at East Tennessee State from 2014-17. While there, he worked as the recruiting coordinator, as well.
Gordon joins South Carolina’s staff, which features Mainieri going into his first season as the program’s new head coach. Under Mainieri, Terry Rooney will work as the pitching coach/recruiting coordinator. Monte Lee returns for his third season in Columbia but now as the associate head coach/hitting coach. John Hendry, who will primarily work with the pitchers, was brought in as an assistant coach from Virginia. And Ryan West is the Director of Baseball Operations.
