South Carolina baseball loses two players to transfer portal, one no longer with program
South Carolina baseball will be without three members of its roster heading into next season, a program spokesperson confirmed to GamecockCentral on Wednesday.
Fifth-year catcher Jonathan French and freshman outfielder Thomas Powell will both enter the transfer portal. Meanwhile, sophomore catcher Zander Buchan is no longer with the program.
French is the biggest piece to head to the portal. He was mainly a backup to starting catcher Cole Messina last year, making 18 starts behind the plate. He hit .218/.371/.346 with two homers and 11 RBI and struck out 34 times in 78 plate appearances.
South Carolina will also be without Buchan behind the dish. He redshirted last year in his first year on the team. He attended nearby A.C. Flora High School, where he hit .366 with 14 doubles, seven home runs and 33 RBI as a senior.

Besides Messina, the Gamecocks only have a few other options at catcher next year. Freshman Ryan Bakes and senior transfer Dalton Reeves will be competing for the backup role.
Then there’s Powell, who was an incoming freshman. The 5-foot-11, 195-pound outfielder played his high school ball at River Bluff (SC).
