South Carolina baseball fans haven’t had a good time in 2025. The Gamecocks’ season ended on Tuesday with an 11-3 loss to the Florida Gators in the first round of the SEC Tournament in Hoover, Alabama. It was a mercy-killing of sorts as it ended the third losing season in Columbia in the last 55 years.

One of the highlights of this spring came off the field. Earlier in May, the SEC Network aired the documentary In Spirit that chronicled the Gamecocks’ run to back-to-back College World Series titles (and the emotional stories of Charlie Peters and Bayler Teal) in 2010 and 2011. The film was produced by former South Carolina outfielder Jake Williams and gave fans the opportunity to think back to a better time in the program’s history.

One of the top players on those 2010 and 2011 teams was relief pitcher Matt Price. The right-hander made three All-SEC teams with the Gamecocks, and this week, he picked up another honor.

The Athletic released its SEC All-Century Team for baseball, and Price was one of two relievers who made the cut, alongside Mississippi State’s Jonathan Holder. Former Gamecocks Justin Smoak (first base), Jackie Bradley, Jr. (outfield), and Michael Roth (starting pitcher) all earned inclusion in the conversation but were, ultimately, left off the team. Roth, in fact, was labeled as the “toughest omission.”

For Price, inclusion on the All-Century Team just makes sense. The fireballer is the College World Series’ all-time wins leader (5), picking up victories in 2010, 2011, and 2012. He also logged four saves in Omaha in his career. Price is South Carolina baseball’s and the SEC’s career leader in saves (43). He is one of four players to log 20 saves in a season (three are Gamecocks), doing so in 2011.

The biggest moment of Price’s career came to close the 2010 season. He pitched 2.2 innings to complete the national championship-clinching game against UCLA, earning a victory in extra innings. He also registered two wins and two saves against the rival Clemson Tigers during his career. Most notably, Price beat Clemson to send USC to the College World Series National Championship Series in 2010.
